Chaga?
    #20837886 - 11/14/14 06:31 PM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.
Woods, Southern Appalachian Mountains, around 4,000' on a living tree

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

Spore print color:
Very important!

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

Chaga or just some other tree disease?

What kind of tree is that?  Could you post a cross section?

I'm no pro on trees and whatnot, but once upon a time I did take a natural history course and id say this tree (based on the bark) looks pretty similar to an alder.

From the pictures alone it looks an awful lot like a bitter cherry tree, with a cedar in the background?
What region was this found in, OP?

I've been researching Chaga, chaga look alikes, and birch trees for the last 1/2 hour now because of this thread
Yeah it could be a Birch tree. It's hard to tell from those pictures, but not hard enough that I couldn't definitely rule it out or anything.
The bark has the same look to it, but a lot of trees have that look as well, including cherry trees.
It looks like you could peel strips off it, horizontally.

I also found something recently that I thought might be Chaga but now I'm not so sure.
I'll be back. Still researching some more. :takingnotes:
