what does a pf cake feel like after pressure cooker?
    #20838230 - 11/14/14 07:53 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I just used a pressure cooker for the first time to make my PF cakes. in the past, I boiled them in a canning pot. Out of the 12 cakes I made with my pressure cooker, I opened (sacrificed) one just to feel the substrate and see if it felt as though it was too dry or too wet. I'd never opened any jars in the past to figure out what they feel like. To my surprise, the substrate felt completely unlike what I expected. It felt like bread dough. it was very tacky. I used the common mixture of two parts vermiculite 1 part brown rice flour 1 part water. I put the mixture in half pint jars and put a layer of vermiculite at the top, roughly 1 centimeter. I put the jars into the pressure cooker for approximately one hours (15 psi). I think maybe next time I'll go a little bit less time. Any suggestions? Any thoughts on how the cake should have felt? I already went ahead and inoculated v11 jars... I obviously did not in acculate the jar that I opened up and felt. I hope I didn't screw up

What you're asking is irrelevant. If you use the correct amount of materials and water, then the contents of your jars are fine. Why are you inquiring about this?

Maybe he was curious. You can never innovate if you always "follow the rules to a T". Everyone here seems to think everything has to be done like we are mindless drones. You never learn anything if you dont mess up. He did something different than me. Lets laugh and ridicule!

You're speaking as if he stumbled upon some new secret that has revolutionized cultivation. He did something that didn't make any sense. Get over it.

Maybe he wanted to learn about the consistency for future endeavors was the point. Not necessarily will pf cakes. Just in general. The more you know the better.

What if nobody was ever curious about anything. The norm used to be using fish tanks and drip shields. People learn by fucking with stuff, not by blindly following shit to a T

And to answer your question, you did just cook the cake. Its normal for it to change consistancy

He's asking how they should feel. How are we supposed to respond to that? We know, through inspection, that if you use the correct amount of materials outlined in the TEK, the consistency is perfect for Mycelium to colonize. Therefore, there is no need to open a jar and feel the substrate. Not sure what he's going to improve upon here.

Alright settle down everybody.

It's goofy to put your fingers in your cakes after cooking them, and it's goofy to chastise the guy if he wanted to open a single jar to see how it felt.

As long as he doesn't tell us about how he stuck his dick in it I think this one might be free to go.

No no, I'm just having some fun here. He still inoculated 11 jars and I'm sure they will turn out great.

I just can't help but laugh when I imagine him sitting there digging in a PF cake and wondering if that's how it should feel or not.

Nah that's funny as hell.  But mostly because it's at the one stage where you absolutely don't wanna touch it.  You'd think he might ask how it would feel before you cook it, but not after sterilization.

Well, if he loaded the jars, he likely already knows how that feels. Maybe as a point of comparison he wanted to know what the pressure cooking process did to the texture. Not sure I would have made a post about it, but damn, some of you guys can be pretty shitty to the noobs.

Yeah. I was just curious about the way they felt because I was told that you can cook the moisture out of them if you cook them for too long. The moisture felt fine, but it It felt differently than what I had imagined it might feel like.
In regards to what was said about me messing up, I didn't know that I had messed up. The only thing I did wrong that I know of is I opened a jar. It's not like I'm going to use the jar. I threw it away afterwards. I followed the instructions that somebody posted here on the Shroomery. I didn't do anything differently. However, I have read many different instructions and the time you are supposed to cook them varies on many of the instructions. I've read things ranging from 30 minutes all the way up to two hours of cooking. But anyways… Thank you guys for your input. I truly appreciate all the feedback.

Well, it is interesting that the cake felt tacky.  Did it look dry from the outside of the jar?

So did it feel like cooked oatmeal in there?  If I were made of mycellium, I'd enjoy a bowl of oatmeal.

Obviously the consistency is going to change because the materials are being cooked. I'm not so sure anyone has been really rude to the guy, it's the rest of you who get off on playing good cop. I don't think this question has ever been asked here (And why would it?) so naturally people are going to wonder why anyone would do this. It's the internet guys, get over it. You know how these boards are.

Its called general knowledge.  The way I see it, the more you know about a given topic, the better. Even if you may think it is extraneous info, it may come to use at some point down the line. Who knows, but chastising someone less knowledgeable for being curious is comedic to me.
