How do low temps effect mushrooms?
    #2083632 - 11/08/03 12:19 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

My ex wife is growing in a few bins on high quality compost. The colonized compost is about 3-4 inches deep. SHe expecting large fruits. However, her growing area was down to about 60 degrees at night, and mid to upper 60s during the daytime. The pins formed nicely but they were small in girth. Recognizing temp to possibly be the problem, she quickly moved em into a 74-78 degree climate. Now they've grown. THere has been many aborts, and sort of pathetic looking mushrooms. Was this most likely due to the temp? She realizes there are many ohter factors do be considered, but do temps do this? SHe is almost wondering if there is an underlying contam within the compost. One bin still hasn't matured, and has pathetic looking pins with small heads. She is NOT casing which may be some of the reason, yet shes not cased compost before and had much better results (than now). She fans about 4x a day and they seem to have adequate moisture. Hopefully the temps were the problem and they will pull thru in their second flushes.

They should still grow fine that way, but it would take a lot longer when it's cold. Humidity can decrease a lot if it's cold, maybe that's the problem? Humidity with uncased substrate really needs to be >95%. Big water droplets can also cause aborts, also chemicals, etc.

Can't think of anything else except maybe the compost, itself? You say it's good compost, though.

A picture would help.

Yeah she says the humidity is definately up there. THey are rubbermaids with small polyfill holes above the substrate. But maybe she is overmisting? She has done em this way before, giving them a good misting daily, and its always worked out fine. she just wanted to make up for the water that a casing layer usually supplies. Should she see no evidence of water?
Thanks

ALso, could she perhaps be putting too much peroxide in the misting bottle? She gives it about a shot per filled water bottle.
Sorry for these basic questions

It could be both, but how many flushes? How big is the flush? What is actually wrong with the mushrooms?

They can be short if it's a really big flush, and you will see lots of aborts.

ITs the first flush. She would est it will be 3/4 oz dry at the very most. Except she still can't tell because they've not opened up. The fruitbodies are just not bulky, but they are very high in number. The area is about 2.5 feet by 1.5 feet at the most. Depth is about 3-4 in. The mushrooms just look small and sort of unhealty (with all the aborts), and like I said, rather thin in girth. She was expecting Ryche Hawke monsters because she is growing in the same way that clyde does in his Dung Bros kit.

What do they actually look like? I can't get a picture in my head from just the word "unhealthy."

Well, they've flushed out a bit more and I guess she seems fairly happy with it. By unhealthy I mean like thinner stalks, just not the big mushrooms she imagined. Oh well, she will take what she can get. I think they will come through in the second flush.
Thanks for all your help

No prob. Thin stalks sounds like there is too much CO2 or not enough water.
