is this thing a truffle?
    #20831260 - 11/13/14 09:41 AM (9 years, 3 months ago)

Found in SW Washington on the coast, near conifers and on the ground but sort of in the ground.  It is very hard but cut cleanly.  Inside it *may* looked veined with white, but I'm not certain.  I can press the insides and it feels slightly softer - perhaps like hardening clay. The smell is very slight and somewhat reminiscent of anise/licorice.

After a night of sitting out it is slightly white on the outside.

Thanks.

Put it in a tupperware in the fridge, the scent upon opening should be overwhelmingly strong and pungent, something akin to ferret sex mixed with garlic.  There are parts that look like truffle and others that don't.  It may either be immature or mushy in parts from being past prime, or maybe it's not a truffle.  Any macro shot closer up on the texture inside?  Really though, smelling them in person is the best way to decide.  It should scream TRUFFLE!

OK - how do you know what ferret sex smells like?  You don't even want to know what googling "what does ferret sex smell like"  returned

Back on topic though - I'd like to see the gleba more clearly too.  The specific type of tree  associated with it is pretty important.
