Mirror Neurons and Advertising * 1

Mirror Neurons and Advertising

Mirror neurons are visuomotor neurons in the brain that fire whenever a person carries out an action. Astonishingly, if someone watches another person carry out an action, that person’s mirror neurons will fire in groupings that are similar to the person carrying out the action. Mirror neurons are particularly responsive to two kinds of human actions: grasping with the hand and movement of the hand toward the mouth. Mirror neurons are thought to have the capability to create passive advertising environments wherein the observer – or customer – may learn about sales products vicariously.

Mirror neurons might be applicable to the advertising industry. When we watch someone carry out an act, mirror neurons are thought fire throughout specific neural pathways with the ultimate goal of helping us understanding the actor’s behavior. That is, when we watch someone carry out an act, mirror neurons fire, and ultimately we internally reenact the observed action. This idea is important if one considers the advertising industry. Every day we see hundreds of pictures and commercials which are meant to increase our likelihood of buying a certain product.

Sophie Lacoste-Badie and Olivier Droulers (2014) designed an experiment to see just how well mirror neurons could help advertising companies. One hundred and thirty undergraduate and postgraduate students were selected from a university. The participants were instructed to watch television under two conditions. In the first condition the participants were exposed to a grasping and drinking video commercial involving an off brand mineral water. In the second condition participants were not exposed to any such interaction. After the experiment was over participants were then instructed to fill out a questionnaire. The conclusion was that the participants in the grasping and drinking condition had increased product recall, brand recall, product recognition, and packaging recognition – but showed no increases in brand recognition.

In this journal article Lacoste-Badie and Droulers did not operationally define what product recall, brand recall, product recognition, packaging recognition, or brand recognition were. This made it hard for me to interpret the data.

Despite Badie and Droulers failure to list operational definitions, I think that mirror neurons have a great potential for advertising. I believe that designing commercials or 'moving GIF Images' on the internet may be a great way for companies to appeal to customers. I also think Albert Bandura’s bobo doll study – and studies like it – may yield information that is important. For instance, the bobo doll study worked better if male children were primed by male models and if the model was well dressed. The study also showed that hostile and aggressive behaviors tend to be strongly imitated by children (which reminds me of children and Power Rangers). On another note, I think that color could be carefully chosen in order to appeal to certain customers. I believe if these bits of information are put together carefully, better advertising for certain products could increase sales.

Among the newest discoveries, mirror neurons show great potential for advertising. Being able to manipulate passive environments by using data from mirror neuron experiments may put companies interested in the psychology of advertising at an advantage. If more information about mirror neurons is yielded, I expect that large companies will consider the current literature when designing advertisements.

I will make a power point like post in this thread at a later time. It will sum up the article and my understanding of it.

im not saying all of the kids in the world need to have super advanved ai teachers catering to their every question, but this reading bs has gone on for way to long. in my opinion someone at the top has known about this and reluctant to share the truth, only hogging the greeds.

a years worth of university knowledge can be taught within a week or month given the right situation. i know this for a fact.

It is good that you can learn a year's worth of knowledge in a month.

But, for people like me. Writing is a key tool. Perhaps my information is fringe information, but I am learning and that is what matters to me. I don't seek to impress.

If you like this kind of stuff about advertising, read the book "buyology". I really liked it. It's a yellow book.
