Maybe I'm just stoned, but would this work?
    #2082289 - 11/07/03 10:49 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I read somewhere on here about sterility issues in the outdoors... It said something to the effect of: "if you keep a piece of bread inside on a table, it will develop green mold. if, however, you put it outside, it will not develop the green mold as easily."

This got me thinking because it made sense... It seems that an airflow outside prevents bacteria and spores from successfully flourishing on the bread... Now, what I am wondering is if you would be at less a risk for contams at innoculation if you did it outdoors and not inside? Has anyone tried it? I'd like to get some more info on it... Thanks,

The mushroom spores would have a hard time germinating just like the other spores.

so it would have a hard time germinating inside the jar? what i am talking about is innoculating with a spore syringe in a presterilized BRF jar while being outside rather than inside... would it work successfully?

Are you asking if it would work or if there would be less chance of contamination?

I see no reason why inoculating outdoors wouldn't work. As for less chance of contamination...maybe? I'm not sure. Guess I'm not much help, sorry.

What if you were trying to grow some other mushrooms and spores from a different species landed on your substrate. Would you consider it contammed then? Yeah you would because something is growing on it that you don't want growing on it. This will mostly fail.

Stuff isnt sterilized outside. If you sterilize something than anything can grow in it without having to worry about other organisms. If you innoculate outside you are going to run into a whole bunch of problems

I've changed my opinion...because I've never had any experience with this before, I was just thinking (or typing) out loud. So inoculating outside wouldn't work. Right.

Maybei f you inoculate 100 cow patties you'll get one right (read something like that somewhere).

Basically what he is trying to say is that because of the wind outside its harder for bacteria to attach and thrive off of the subject.
Even if this is true...why not stay inside and use a fan? heheh

you're just stoned. that's crazy talkin'

indoor growing = creating ideal environment for fungus to grow in. therefore all fungi thrive and do well, but contams are common too.

outdoor growing = up to mother nature. spores everywhere, the air thick with them. forget controlling anything from the spore stage - your only hope is to 'plant' already healthy mycelium with food for it to eat, and waiting.

you guys have all jumped on the wrong bus.what he was trying to ask is would it be reasonable to expect a cleaner environment if he inoculated outside the house, then took everything inside again.

i'd imagine that if you realy wanted to try it you'd want to pick a cool still night with a lot of moisture in the air,i might be wrong but i'd imagine that contams of any kind would find it extreamly difficult to become airbourne from foot traffic etc if the air is very damp.

it would be much more practicle to build yourself a glovebox or flowhood.

In the middle of winter it might be better to do it outside, but the reason fungi grow more quickly inside (i.e. the bread) is probably mostly because of the still air (and humidity would be a factor, too, but I guess that would depend on the season.) Basically, if there's still air, a spore or bacteria or whatever thrives in only one place, and isn't spread around, so it makes it's happy little home there.

EDIT: This doesn't mean it's better to inoculate in moving air, or incubate jars in moving air. The moving air thing only applies to a substrate. Moving air is bad when inoculating, unless it's laminar-flow.

step 1: get some jars
step 2: do everything you need to do to get cakes
step 3: go outside with your cakes
step 4: set up an outdoor patch. youll have to get specifics from someone else, i just posted a question about specifics in cultivation, there might be answers to that soon.

It's better to get mycelia, trying to germinate outside will screw you over.

and no, this will not work, outside IS NOT sterile is any sense of the word... the reason contams don't grow outside is because fresh air and sun light kills contams, not because the spores aren't in the air...

Man, I must need glasses.  I didn't think the title of this thread was "everybody here is stoned"

Will it work, yes.  Will it work any better than inside, no.  Will it work worse than inside, depends how clean your inside is.

Here's a main reason why this is silly.  The substrate is inside the jar.  Get it?  Ok let me add a little emphasis, The subsrate is INSIDE the jar.  The inside of the jar is just like the inside of a house or a terrerium.  It is an unnatural environment that is intended to favor and cultivate one species.  This means that you better have just one species in there, or both species will flourish.

Outside is the opposite.  Nature is a place where many species flourish in co-existence.  If this isn't obvious, look out the nearest window and hold your breath until you've finished counting all the different species of life you can see.  Our artificial environments actually produced far better results than nature, when we have optimized them for our singular species, and have eliminated all other competitors.  Along the same lines, outside it's harder to get as kick-ass results, but easier to get some mediocre results.

After all this, I think the originallly quoted statement about the bread is completely false.  If I set a piece of bread outside my house, it would be host to many different types of contams within a few days.  Now inside the only difference would be that probably only one or two contams would grow on it, and they would take it over.

Anyway, no, don't innoculate outside.  Won't help.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
