hohohohoho the man: hunting vines is not like hunting mushrooms or cacti. it's way tricker. ask the local people, they'll be able to show you the plant (hey, this is an easy one to mistake by other vines), i would recommend you not to try to ID it. or buy in the fairs... be careful the man, there ARE poisonous vines, don't go munch on any leaves you see hanging down in peru. good luck!

Here is a picture of Banisteriopsis Caapi vine from the amazon.
I kinda doubt that you would find this vine in COsta Rica.

I would recommend looking around the local Indian markets and fairs like felix suggested. That would be alot safer and more efficient than wandering around an unfamiliar rainforest in an unfamiliar country seeking an unfamilar plant. Or perhaps sign up for an ayahuasca-tourist event, instead. Google "ayahuasca tour" and you'll find several options. good luck

I aslso do not recall the vine in Ecuador either. Venezuela, Peru and the Colombian Amazonia is thier home.
Read One River by Wade Davis or look in most University library reference stacks for the Harvard Botanical Museum Leaflets, R. E. Schultes provides many locations for these vines and with pictures of them, illustrations actually. Also read Richard Burtons writings on his original discovery of the vines and their uses in Folk Medicine.
Buy Jonatrhan Ott's Ayahuasca Analogues.

perhaps there's tetrapterys methystica there (EQ) BUT i think i've got what THE MAN wants. he just wants to stare at the magical plant and that's something i always do (and love to do), when i see an entheogen for the first time or when i see a powerful magical plant, to feel it's power can even leave one 'emotional' or feeling good somehow... i remember when i spotted every entheogen i know for the first time... i love to go to the anadenanthera trees, just for the good vibes they keep around them. before i know those trees i used already to smoke on that spot. =)
Ott's ayahuasca analogues should be a great book... the little of it i see in the net is very useful!

what you mean you wouldn't have time to prepare for a ceremony? no one is prepared for nothing (new), specially to DMT. >=] but if you're referring on starting a MAOI friendly diet, i think you can do it from now and you'll be fine in EQ. besides that i don't know if one needs to change its diet so radically for such a long time before. i thought what mattered were the day or the few days before the experience (and after). as for sexual fasting i don't know shit.
