Does L-Tryptophan increase mushroom potency, or does it have to be just plain tryptophan? Would it work to add something like this to the spawn or substrate?

L-Tryptophan is one of the two tryptophan stereoisomers, and is usually (almost always) what is implied by just saying tryptophan. It has, to my knowledge, not been shown to increase the alkaloid production. It has however been shown NOT to increase the alkaloid content in mycelial culture in at least two studies of P. cubensis and P. baeocystis. Perhaps you are thinking of tryptamine?

Their have been about fifteen thousand posts about this and not one goddamned "study". Try it and see. I'm thinking that DMT would have a better chance of sucess, but I'm not sure how all of the enzymes act to form 4-ho-dmt

Kelp has tryptophan in it and does, yes increase potency. But phosphorus and alkali are necessary. This tek has everything necessary http://www.shroomery.org/9376/Poo-with-Extras
That tek is all you need, but here is some of my own 2 cents worth thrown in: Cubes and shrooms that don't grow very long shouldn't get any more tryptophan than whats in this tek. It seems like the fungus will produce psilocin up until a peak point, and then start focusing on turning that psilocin into psilocybin. It seems like there's a certain peak point of "chemicals" and at that point all ya can do is change the ratio between psilocin and psilocybin.
Cubes don't grow long enough to convert psilocin over, so the cubes with tryptophan added have a ratio higher in psilocin which makes them feel fake. I don't really care for the psilocin buzz myself. Species that grow at least 4 months don't seem so fake, and those that grow for 6 months are great with added tryptophan. Like, some stones left to grow for 6 or 7 months. But species that grow for 9 or 10 months or longer don't really benefit from tryptophan. It seems like using tryptophan speeds up when the fungus reaches its peak of psilocin and starts converting it to psilocybin BUT if the species is fast growing, using too much tryptophan is kinda crappy and in slow species tryptophan makes little if any difference.
The Tek I linked doesn't have enough tryptophan in it to make cubes seem fake or plasticy. If you did decide to add additional tryptophan, I recommend only doing it on species that grow for longer than 5 months and less than 8. LOL

This thread has been closed.
Reason: We sure don't want our mushrooms giving fake trips.
I'm pretty sure since OP hasn't checked in for over 8 years, he's not still sitting on the edge of his seat waiting for an answer. RR
