Possible Problem with WBS
    #2078090 - 11/06/03 06:29 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I am not sure if I have a problem or not, after the 4th day of innoc of this wbs I noticed a kindof dry brownish powder in the jar. I can see some small mycelial growth at various points throughout jar. I was wondering if this "powdery" substance was normal? I have 2 1/2 pints that both look similar. Then I have a blank 1/2 pint jar that dosn't have it. I also have a larger 1/2 gallon jar that has small growth similar to the 1/2 pints but it dosn't seem to have this "powdery" substance. Could this be due to improper air exchange in the small jars? I used the polly fill tek for the lids. Any suggestions??

Does the brown powder appear dry ?
If so it could be a form or dry rot :[
Whats the substrate make up ?

What is the dry rot caused by? It is wbs, this is the brand. Now that I look really closely at the 1/2 gallon it seems to be forming specifically around the sunflower seeds. I soaked it for like 24 hrs and then pressure cooked at 15 psi for 60 mins. Allowed too cool and then innoculated. I don't see what I did wrong. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Oh yah is there a "easier" grain to go with. Maby popcorn or somthing that isn't multiple seeds mixed together. Or is there a more repitable WBS to go with? Thanks again.

Well it starts like other contams as an endo spore.
I've heard before that one reason sunflower seed isn't oftern used
is due to the large air spaces in the husk, that allows endo spores
a better chance of surviving in side these air pockets.

I normally use millet, which is what your wbs is mainly made up of,
but just lately I've had good success with popcorn.

I just pour it in a pot add water, bring to the boil, boil for
1 or 2 mins, then leave to cool and soak over night, drain
put in jars or bags and pressure cook.

Take good precautions when dumping that stuff.

I don't think I will even re-use the jars. Just to be on the safe side. But anyways it seems that one of the jars has mycelium growing pretty good from what I can see. It still has the dry rot in it but is there a chance in hell the mycelium can overcome this bitch of a contam? Thanks again. Oh yah, is there a certain "brand" or kind of popcorn that works very well?

I let it drain for like 45 mins- 1 hr. I didn't cook it, other than in the pressure cooker. No preboiling.

I think pretty much any popcorn is fine, just
plan untreated raw uncooked pop corn.

Just thought I'd mention I just lost all 6 of my Quart jars to a dusty greenish fucker that looked very similiar to that when I first saw it. I too used a birdseed that probably had too much stuff in it besides millet. I've since found some good millet only birdseed, but was wondering what people thought of trying rye grain instead? (Been reading the mushroom cultivator a lot lately). Also are there any especially common vectors for this kind of contaminate that I should watch out for? Thanks.

I once had a brown mold that looked kinda dry :

There's a good popcorn preparation tek in the faqs :

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/22982

It works pretty well. It's all about soaking the grain for 24 hours, boiling em for an hour and pressure cooking the jars.

I guess the 24 hours soaking step is not really necessary. I will skip it and see next time I try.

.fs.

Well its weird, the mycelium in one actually seems to be taking over (hopefully) the dry rot. The other 2 jars are gone completly, but on seems to be running through the grain very strongly (noticable difference every day) and every couple days I give it a good shake, and to my supprise the "dry" powder is now almost all gone!! Is this incedible or what?! Should I try grg transpher? Or what should I do? I think that if this strain is able to overcome such a quick and powerfull contam I definatly want to allow it to grow out. So I am still open for suggestions. I have some syringes, should I draw some liquid mycelium and innoc some popcorn or millet jars?? All recommendations accepted. Thanks
