Ya I would have to agree with Lhun. Paxillus involutus, severely toxic, several unidentified toxins, symptoms similar to leukemia. DO NOT EAT!

Yes, definitely Paxillus involutus.

This is the only species that has ever killed a mycologist.

You aren't going to die though - people used to think these were edible.  However eating large quantities can cause death.

Next time you find some mushrooms, post the pics here and wait for a couple answers before you eat them.

That white color is from another fungus decomposing your mushroom. They're rotten.

From repeated ingestion?

Yeah, he had probably been eating them for a long time, and his wife who shared the meal was fine. Death is caused by an immune response that winds up attacking red blood cells and only happens upon multiple exposure to the antigen present in the mushroom.

People do that all the time!  The crazy thing is that they almost never get sick from it.  I see at least two - 3 posts a week about eating unidentified mushrooms (usually on facebook but sometimes here) and I can't even remember the last person who ate unid'd mushrooms and reported getting sick.

There was a post on here about a week ago where a guy and his girlfriend ate unidentified Agaricus and the girlfriend got sick.  The guy didn't each much, if I recall.  That's the only one I can recall from Shroomery.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20759619

Still, my heart thumps whenever I hear of unidentified mushrooms being eaten.

Those are definitely paxillus involutus IMO.

Well at least that is over, and the OP has a nice story to tell in the future.

Always love to see the TC's come to the rescue. I just wish I was still in the bay area to participate in the mushroom hunting and identification classes. Are you still doing those Alan?

Yeah, but they don't contain toxic chemicals. They contain an antigen that your immune system can eventually develop a deadly overreaction to. Eating it once is safe. Every time you eat it after that you'll have a higher risk for developing a deadly allergic reaction to the antigen.
