1st grow: are jars supposed to initiate growth all at once?
    #2067211 - 11/03/03 03:27 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

this is my friend of a friend's first time growing, he's doing 10 polyfil quart jars of rye grain. he pre-soaked the rye overnight, then simmered the rye for about 45 minutes, and then rinsed it in a pasta strainer. he then PC'ed 2/3 full quart jars at 15psi for 60-70 minutes. he inoculated using a spore syringe as per normal, and the jars have been in an incubation chamber at 80-84`f ever since. it is now right at 96 hours (4 days) since inoculation. the first signs of growth were seen this morning at about inoc + 80 hours. now 2 of his 10 jars are showing growth, with multiple patches of mycelium about 5-10mm in diameter.  my foaf is very excited about this growth because he figured he would screw everything up the first time , but he is wondering about the other 8 mycelium-less jars.  is it normal for jars to show signs of growth at different times or is it supposed to be a uniform progression?  he is just wondering whether this is a sign that these 8 jars are going to be problematic. i searched through the faq before asking this but i'm sorry if i should have found this answer elsewhere. and thanks a ton to anyone that can give me advice for my foaf. he tells me that he practically yelled with delight upon seeing those first beautiful dots of snow-white mycelium

Growing shrooms from spores is very hard to do in sync.

so it's perfectly normal for spores in different jars to germinate at different times and i'm being overly paranoid? hehe i thought so

Yup.

This is why people clone after their first grow. They can grow clones of the strongest mushrooms in their environment.

When you inoculate with spores, it is a turkeyshoot wheather any of the millions of spores you inoculate will thrive in your grow room. When you clone your best shroom, you know it will thrive.

I've wittnessed vastly different growth from jar to jar from the same syringe in the same environment.

update: a week and one day after inoculation, the 8 dormant jars are still dormant. i think my foaf is going to go ahead and pitch them. however the 2 that did grow are pretty much done. does anyone have any ideas as to what might have happened?

just to let u know, the jars that my friend is incubating now didnt show any growth at all for about 6-7 days after inoculation and now they are looking pretty good. My friend is still pretty new at this, but he's learned quickly that patience is very important in this hobby.

Give them a good 12 days before you pitch them. I've had jars of grain start that late before.
