Spanish/Algebra
    #20532580 - 09/07/14 10:09 AM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Well folks I am a former Spanish teacher and currently I teach Algebra 1 so like, yeah. I doubt it but if anyone has any questions about these subjects on here but let me know and I'll do my best to answer. I can also answer general linguistics questions: phonetics/syntax/morphology/etc.

Take a class at your local community college.

I need practice for algebra for the GRE.

Throw out some problems and I will try one. If I can't get it, then I will ask you.

The fastest? I don't know, honestly. Maybe Khan academy

Solve for x and y.

3x+ y = 8
-x + 4y = -7

1.)

x = 8 - y / 3

y = 8/3 - x

2.)

x = -7/4 - y

y = -7/4 + x

I did it again.

How did I do?

you're going the wrong direction for step 2, try something to find the actual values x and y equal
my advice, use y=8-3x to solve the problem since it doesn't have a fraction

1.)

y = 8 - 3x

x = (8 + y)/3

2.)

x = -7 + 4y

y = (-7 - x) / 4

3x+ y = 8
-x + 4y = -7

y = 8 - 3x

-x + 4(8-3x) = -7

-x + 32 - 12x = -7

-13x = -39

x=3

Uhhhh, can I ask you, if you teach in America, what level of math you are certified for? I'm working on prep to take the math content area certification, but I'm just now taking calculus 3. I've been recreationally watching history of mathematics lectures, but I've only just scratched the surface. Trying to not pay for courses I don't really need to take, so I'm trying to learn it on my own to speed up graduation.

Do you ever dislike the way secondary education doesn't stress derivations, and uses silly tools like "foil." To me foil is just the common sense way to foil two binomials, but people would always get confused by larger polynomials because they forgot the actual rules for it. They only remembered the silly pneumonic for the specific case.

I have a BA in Spanish and I'm going for a masters now in education which will also provide me with a teaching license later on. I was wonder about some of your experiences teaching Spanish. Did you teach in secondary? Did you have any success with non-native speakers actually picking up the language?
I'm hoping to teach at a university rather than a high school but there is still obviously a chance that I may end up teaching at a high school which is why I am inquiring about your personal experiences.

damn I forgot about this thread. I quit the job teaching algebra because quite simply it was a nightmare.

I taught college Spanish while in grad school, never taught secondary. I had a few very bright students who picked up the material but for the most part the students did not appear to absorb more than was absolutely necessary to pass the tests. The job was a lot of fun, though, and the only reason I don't still do it is quite embarrassing- I got kicked out of grad school.

Damn, sorry to hear about that! I'm only in my first semester but it seems to be going well so far. Sorry to bump an old thread but the title did interest me and still does. I learned Spanish as an adult but my circumstances involved immersion for a number of years in mexico. I was basically the only non-native Spanish speaker in my undergrad Spanish program who could really speak fluently or write. It always bothered me that these kids graduate with a Spanish degree and I can't have a conversation with them in Spanish. I hope as a teacher I can help combat that a little but I know it depends a lot on the students.
