Cool Mist Questions
    #2077437 - 11/06/03 02:56 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

A FOAF has started using a cool mist setup with her terrarium and has a few questions. She has been trying to follow the steps from this link: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7994

1) She assumes that this is meant to run 24/7 but worries that this may not provide enough humidity for casings. Is perlite necessary in addition to the cool mist, or will it be adequate?

2) In the tek she is trying to follow, is there supposed to be mist coming out of the tube? From what she has read, there isn't supposed to be, but if this is the case, will it provide enough humidity?

3) She is also curious as to how big or how many holes need to be drilled in the terrarium to allow CO2 release.

I am sure she has some other questions, but these are all the ones she could think of at the time. Any other suggs, even if they dont relate to the questions, are welcome. Thanks in advance,

1. You will find the Coolmist provides way too much humidity if left on 24/7 Try increments of 30 minutes every 2 hours.
2. The cool mist will work wonders, dont worry.
3. I have one 5/8 hole on the other side and i open it once a day to check for any problems and to fan it out.

the reason mine provides way too much humnidity is because i use a large diameter PVC pipe instead of hose. i tried it and was never happy with the hose just to let you know

Cultyvader is right. You don't even need to run it 24/7. Casings keep the humidity up okay themselves as long as you keep misting them. I've never used perlite with casings and never had a problem. The cool mist does push a lot of air though, so most people do put them on a timer to run every 2 hours or so. Just hook it up directly to your terrarium using a hose or pvc.

so, does that mean she shouldn't run it 24/7 with a 3/8" tube running from the cool mist setup? according to the link, #9 says to run the setup 24/7... she doesn't have a hydrometer to really tell the humidity, but there are some signs of drippage on the walls of the terrarium...

what strikes her as odd, though, is that the tek from the link is trying to say that you can run it 24/7 as long as mist isn't coming out of the end of the tube... is she wrong on this?

You can run it 24/7, but putting it on a timer much is better.
