You can just steam them. Put them in a pot (with lids on the bottom of course), bring it to a boil, cover with a lid and turn the stove off. Leave until they are cool enough to handle.

But can the jars be safely emptied in my house? ... Pesky neighbors are pesky.

After they are steamed yeah they should be. Do you have a garage or anything you can do it in? Just don't do it in your grow area of course.

Funny thing is, most people say that using a PC is a lot more efficient than using a pot with water to steam.. I've steamed about 4 batches of BRF PF Tek cakes, not one sign of contam in over 20 steamed jars.. guess I'm doing it correctly, but I normally just steam at a high temp for about 90-100 minutes, again, haven't seen one sign on ANY jars, maybe I'm just lucky..
Sucks to hear that your jars are contamed, Crypt... Better luck next round, man.
I noticed that the jars initially looked like they had a lot of water towards the bottom (in the pics from about 25-28 days ago). I know that excess water in substrate can halt/slow growth, as well as increase contamination risk, especially at 78F...
Again, better luck next round. Trial and error.. we've all gone through it. Gyo knows that I had some issues w/ my FC and keeping fruiting conditions optimal (recently changed some things and now they're flourishing after about a month of wondering 'wtf is going on!?')
Gyo, as well as the other experienced and knowledgable users will guide you in the right direction, Gyo has been more than helpful and stuck with me through 'thick and thin'
Long story short, follow the tek's to a T, take advice, and you'll be golden! I saw some of RR's PF Tek videos someone posted earlier in thread, but I've got a good link in my sig on the PF Tek, maybe you've read it, but it's got a lot of good information, pictures and step by step guide to the whole process to ensure that you're getting the sub perfect as well as the rest of the process from substrate mixture to consolidation.
Also there's one for a SGFC instruction, which is best/easiest so far for beginning with cakes. just make sure if you decide to go w/ a SGFC (shotgun fruiting chamber) to follow that Tek TO A T as well as the PF Tek..
Sorry for long post, but again - God speed, good sir! things will come into place in time, and patience will be required!

Check my new thread.. 2nd brf.. Successo!~ I am not almost read to harveast. I devised my own heating cooling system by wiring / making a dual temp micro controller (ones for beer). Has worked very smoothly ever since. Have two climates.. one controlling mild temps 75=77 for colonizing jars.. and 79=81 for fruiting in chamber. Now all is working.. no contams.. but some have stalled. Out of 9 jars only two stalled and the rest fruit!
