I want to know if I can do a SGFC with the small storage container I have showing in the op. Any advice? Also, if I can do it... I need another of same size to put into, correct?

Since I've started putting together this microscopy project I've found several benefits including gleeful enthusiasm, and that my area of study is perfect for studying in. So, I have high hopes that I will at least be moderately, if not figuratively (in that I'll learn something) successful.
spend 70 more dollars on a presto 16 quart pressure cooker. It's worth it. It can hold 7 quart jars which is enough for any small scale home cultivator.
If you're only doing small brown rice flour cakes with half pint wide-mouth jars then you can get away with sterilizing them for 2 hours in a steam bath without added pressure.
When working with whole grains you need to pressure sterilize them for 90 - 120 minutes or steam sterilize them for 8 hours.
So yes you can work your way around not having a pressure cooker but do you want to wait around for 8 hours while your grain jars steam? A minimum wage job at 8 hours could pay for that pressure cooker.

Hello!
First off I am in no position to give advice, I am VERY new but I have been experimenting with different techniques and I feel its my duty to tell you what the most important one is to save you time, money, and energy.
First, Its my noobie opinion JARS are a trap and really restrict your potential with limited supplies such as PRESSURE COOKERS. I bought two pressure cookers, digital and a HUGE manual one. But it can only hold 10 quart jars, that's why I've moved to BAGS, you can buy ones with a breathable patch for a quarter a piece. They fit much better in Pressure cookers, so if you can only afford a small or medium cooker, invest 10 bucks in BAGS and you will be able to fit 3 times the amount of material in them. I for example can fit 20pds of WBS in my large pressure cooker in bags and my small digitable cooker can hold roughly 10pds but I usally use it to sterilize tools.
So free yourself from jars: put a big smile on , check your walk, and raise your tub full of jars above your head and throw them out. It was a very freeing experience for me and it will be for you too if you decide to switch.
Just my 2 cents to avoid pressure cooker space issues, good luck with your grow.

Then why are you giving it? Jars are fantastic and they work for everyone here with a half decent sterile procedure and half a brain.

Yeah switching to bags would be fiscally irresponsible of me since I already have...
I don't know how many jars I have.

Wait, you mean to tell me that my 5 or 6 half point wide mouths will need 8 hours of steaming?
I might do 8 jars, but I'd first need to know if I can use the container in my original post as a sgfc for 5 to 8.

u can steam grains, but spring for a Presto or AA pressure cooker if u can, you will get better results more than likely.
bags are awesome, but if u only have an SAB they difficult to work with.
u can make an SGFC out of anything, big or small. my first SGFC was two shoe box sized plastic containers on top of one another. just make sure to get at least 3"+ perlite in there.

Thank you for that! 3' perlite it is.
Though, I did have a question about wood. Can I study these microsopy samples in individual clay planters / wood planters? Would wood be a nice humid planter for them, or would it only serve as an extra way to contam?

I have not yet decided if I am ever going to enlarge / broaden my studies with bigger PC - I was thinking something like a 6qt pc for up to 6 1/2 wide mouths.
Will something like this be adequate? Considering this PC
Or this... Or this PC
The less I spend the better. I am at the end of budget for the next couple weeks.

What about the other one I listed?:

However, I think I might just steam for several hours with traditional pot the first go... I dunno. budget tight It's not like I am hurting financially either. It's just I allocated a budget and planning on sticking with it.

Steaming works if you do it right. And it's kind of hard to botch that job. Just steam them if you don't want to invest in a PC

I was told I should steam for 8 hours for 6 1/2 pint wide mouths. Is this correct, or did I misunderstand? I have several large pots with which to do this, one of which is a calphalon that has a snug fititng, rubberized edge lid. How long should I steam up to 6 1/2 pint widemouths? I know to put 1 inch water and jar lids as base.

This is a broadcast message brought to you by OP.
I want to thank each and every one of you for taking your time to help me thus far. This is by no means an admission to an end to these questions, just an intermediary thanks for all the fish! You Shroomites are wonderful!

2 hours of steaming is fine for half pints. Anything larger you need 8hours.

But doing 3 hours is probably a safer bet. Thanks for the advice!

Go rake some leaves, make $70 and buy a 16qt Presto that you will use for years and years. I'm actually going to can some fresh salsa next year More uses than just for cultivation.
