Once you pick the mushroom, it will not mature anymore. Rotting should be your only concern.

What's the big deal about your caps breaking open? Do you have a spore phobia or something?

Get a rather large box, and some sort of screen or preferably wire mesh that you use to stand your cakes on, I can't remember the name of it but that sounds close enough it's just a wire grid like a screen only with bigger holes. put this in the bottom with paper towels on the very bottom. (you can put dessicant underneath this if you really want to)
Then get a box fan just a bit bigger then your box and put it over the top in a dark closet. It will take about 2-5 days for the mushrooms to dry completly to the point where you can powder them. (this depends on mushroom size if you have alot of phatties I suggest you cut them into two pieces right down the center to speed drying. Just stick em in the box they'll dry perfect with no blueing (blueing is a sign of oxidation)
If you pick them before the caps open, then the caps won't open!!!!! they stay exactly the same as you put them in the box maybe one or two could break a veil but that would be because they were right on the verge of doing it anyways:)

You know those big square fans, 2ftx2ft and 5in deep? (Sry no metric) I used to put them on the window sill when I had no AC. Just lay one flat on the floor with a window screen on top.

They won't dry very quickly on your desk and they will begin to rot over time, but if you just want to leave them overnight cause you don't have a fan or any dessicant right now, they will be fine.

wasnt this my thread. yes i have a spore phobia, i like having perfect closed caps, makes for neat storage and perfect specimens, plus when the caps open as there drying they split as well, and when dry they break apart. liek i said im kind of a perfectionist and i like to have closed caps attatched to the stem, im weird like that i guess. i mean i am going through the trouble of picking a lil early before veil breaks and i just wanna keep it that way. so will a big ass box fan do the trick and dry them quick enuff?
