Not only that but spores do not meerly drop from the gills. They are actually "blasted" into the air, thereby creating their own air currents in a way. The spores are floating everywhere in the millions when mature mushrooms are sporulating. Not to mention the moist and sticky caps will attract them in a way.

I also sometimes wonder if there is an unknown static charge that is at play as well (attracting spores to the top of the caps), because they can coat the caps fully while leaving roughly half as much on the casing...
