If I paid over ten grand for my University tuition and I got expelled a month after for a crime that had nothing to do with the University, I'd be really pissed and would try to get my money back.

You can get kicked out for crimes committed off campus though. Universities typically have rules set in place for this kind of stuff.

And you'd be stupid to even consider suing.
Your choices in life have consequences. The consequence of committing a sexual offense is that no one will give a shit about how 'unfairly' you're being treated.

Man, most of you all are acting like he raped the woman... and yes, some people DO care about the so called "sex offenders" I for one do, at least some of them.
Few 17 year olds deserve to be labeled a sex offender for life because he had consensual sex with a 15 year old in a state where 16 is the age of consent and the law doesn't have exceptions for those in similar age ranges. Those "sex offenders" I have sympathy for, however this is a very specific set of circumstances I am talking about.
But, back to the story. In my opinion, the police themselves probably should have alerted the school as to what this kid did, if he confessed. If these are just allegations, its not so clear cut.

I'm not acting like he raped the woman. I'm being honest. You may make the distinction between different sexual offenses (as do I) but most people don't. As far as most people are concerned a sex offender is a sex offender and the lot of them need to be burned alive at the stake or have their genitals cut off or any number of things.. Like I said, just go to any news article and read the comments, regardless of the actual crime. The crime could be pissing outside next to a playground at midnight and the headline labels them a sex offender, and that's all it takes. The vitriol comes out and everyone starts calling for his head.
Doesn't matter what you do to get the label, society as a whole is going to lump you in with the people who fuck babies or kidnap 8 year olds, rape them and kill them. And yes, putting up a hidden camera in someone's bathroom is more than enough to get that label.
Actually, real teen sex offenders can be "cured", and there's a very low recidivism rate. But try telling anyone that a sex offender can be cured and they'll have none of it. They'll tell you that they're all sick in the head and there is no cure other than a bullet. People don't care about the facts. You can thank the media for it. They've got everyone programmed to automatically despise anyone who is labeled a sexual offender.
This is actually a subject I know way too much about. Someone very close to me has been dealing with the aftermath of that label for about 15 years now. When people know of his crimes, they don't see him as a person. They see him as an animal, a rabid one that shouldn't even be walking the streets.

Placing hidden cams in bathrooms or other places where there is a "reasonable expectation of privacy", is illegal. He's lucky he's not facing real criminal charges. Doesn't matter who owns the property, or what the intent of said surveillance is. Even department store security officers can be fired and prosecuted for placing cams in changing rooms to catch shoplifters. Hidden cams in a bathroom is completely illegal. Even if the shoe were on the other foot and he owned the place and she was the tenant. Look it up.

It would be defamation if it weren't true. But it is, so no he made his bed and now he must sleep in it. In the states they put your damn mugshot on the web.
He may be able to sue if the school kicks him out, I imagine.

Good point. I would say a lot us are guilty of this. I had someone chew me out once for something like this. There was not a child in sight, the nearby school was hundreds of yards away with heavy foliage concealing it out of view, and nobody saw me except him. And even then all he saw was my back turned to him while I was discreetly watering a shrub. If there's not a portable toilet or public restroom anywhere, I'm just going to water the bushes while taking care to make sure nobody sees my junk hanging out. Sue me.
You are all sex offenders according to the harshest most literal definitions of the law. If you need someone for your witch hunts...go after the scout masters who touch little boys dicks.

This case may be changed on appeal, but a quick google search reveals you to be wrong, at least in the United States.

Also see http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/are-cameras-in-dressing-rooms-legal.html
According to that it varies by state. Canadian laws are likely different.

Terrible idea OP. the best thing he can do is move a thousand miles away. And, even then he will probably have to register as a sex offender.

Hmmm definitely some grey areas for a would-be surveiller to hide behind. If that restaurant owner is really just trying to catch people in the act of vandalizing his restrooms he is shit out of luck (no pun intended). Considering most people just write or carve stuff on the inside of the stall walls, he is not going to be able to accomplish much with a camera anyways (at least not legally).
