pasteurizing ALOT of bulk substrate.
    #2077080 - 11/06/03 03:00 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

i want to be able to make a whole lot of pasteurized straw\poo without as much fuss. a half-dozen pillowcases and my 22 quart pot leaves me pasteurizing all day.

i'm think about maybe getting a 55 gallon drum or a steel barrell or something, putting it on cinderblocks, and putting a burner underneath. i'm worried that the temperature wouldn't be uniform in it though.... does anyone have any suggestions as far as making alot of substrate?

also, for shredding larger quantities of straw, does anyone have any suggestions? i usually run it through a paper cutter, but that takes a very long time. is it even entirely necessary to shread it? i've seen grows where people haven't shredded it and have done fine.

?????

autoclaves are for sterilizing things.

Good call. I still like my pic.

As a serious note, I'm sure I've seen the steel drum and burner method used. I wouldn't think you need be worried about hot spots if the overall temp was right for pasteurization.

I don't own TMC...I know. However, I looked @ the bulk pasteurization bits of GGMM and was left asking the same question. I guess, w/ the therm. on a line, you could measure the temperature @ different depths as you go. A mesh basket to keep the straw, poop, etc. off of the bottom would be easy enough to construct.

You can also take an old beer keg, cut the top off it with a jigsaw and use it as a kettle. It should sit right on top of one of those turkey fryer burners. It'll hold 14.5 gallons and youll at least be able to dump it when youre done. 55 gallons of poo water could be heavy to move.

naw look up wagner in here, someone used a wagner wallpaper striper hooked it up to a cooler, thing makes steam in like 15 minutes, and you can pasteurize however big of cooler you got, prolly more ther enuff room for what you need and he claimed it came out to field capacity so no SQUUEZING.

You can find a used keg behind most restraunts. Just be quiet about it.

or you could buy a keg, drink it via a party and then screw the ten dollar deposit on the keg.

Try to acquire a 35 or 55 gallon drum. I just got a 35 gallon, brand new. I will be trying it out soon.

A turkey fryer works for smaller amounts of straw. It also has a nice propane burner and stand with it. They are costly though. I got a ghetto set up. I raise my drum with a couple cinder blocks. I mixed and matched parts to make my propane burner. It's a camping burner w/ a propane tank attachment on it instead. I'll post pics and a link on here sometime.

You may be interested in the way I used to do it. I think the bulk neglect report has a decent description of it.

Basically use a large plastic barel (or a trash can if you can't find one), add your substrate, then fill with hot tap water from the faucet (after adjusting your hotwater heater's thermestat, mine went up to 170). A small pot of boiling water is then added, bringing the temp up to perfect. Put then lid on, come back and drain in an hour, it should still be pretty hot. If I started at 175, in an hour it had only dropped to 155, which worked great many times. No burners, up to 50 gallons sub at a time, just a small pot on the stove, IMO it's the easiest way to go.

But, if you go the barrell/burner route, it works fine, no need to worry about temperature variations. It's just kinda hard to do in an apartment!

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
