Amanita calyptroderma cross section plus cooperative A. muscaria

Good morning everyone. Feels good to have something to post again.
Lots of early fall rain has the Amanita calyptroderma fruiting in pretty big numbers. My wife and I went for a hunt on Sunday and found this gorgeous egg. Last night I cross sectioned it, and I thought folks here would get a kick out of seeing it.

The other Amanita (A. muscaria group) was an unusual find for the habitat...I spend hundreds of hours each season scouring this area, and it's the first one I've seen here. It cooperated beautifully by fruiting in really sandy, rocky soil just a couple of feet from a beautiful little creek. I did some tricky gyrations to light up the stipe with my reflector...it worked, sort of. Still trying to get the hang of this lighting thing.

Nice, thanks for sharing. Did you try the A. calyptroderma the other day bud?

I did, Lhun! It was delicious. My wife was lured into the kitchen when she smelled it cooking (nothing but olive oil, salt and pepper). She loved it.

I don't find true "Coccora" around here locally, just the light yellow A. vernicoccora. I did not find it so tasty.
I might have to take a trip to pick some A. calyptroderma this year and see for myself how those are.

In what part of the world do you live? I'm from a small town in extreme northern CA called Mount Shasta.
My ancestry is Italian; our family immigrated to the US between 1905 and about 1910. I showed my Dad this egg (he hasn't picked any mushrooms other than porcini and morels that I can recall) and he immediately said, "Wow, you found a Cocci!". He remembers his Nona going thru his mother and fathers baskets after each hunt and carefully inspecting each "Cocci" to make sure it was actually A. calyptroderma, which she obviously knew from the old country.

That's neat that your Dad recognized it! It is quite popular, and considered a choice edible by many. I was told that the standard "Coccora" (calyptroderma) and the "Spring Coccora" (vernicoccora) taste the same, but I'm not sure I believe that. Alan tried A. vernicoccora last time we went picking together and he didn't care much for it either. It has a somewhat fishy flavor - did you taste that with the A. calyptroderma?
I'm south of you in Napa CA. If I drive 45 minutes I know a spot where A. Calyptroderma has been abundant in past years. I just never tried it after my experience with its "spring" variant. You have convinced me otherwise. I have had luck with Matsutake in that area too, so this year I will make sure to head back when it gets a bit wetter.

No fish flavor at all. I cooked it really simply, so that I'd be tasting the mushroom. Had a sweetness to it, almost. It doesn't taste like any other mushroom I've eaten.
I've got family in Santa Rosa and Sonoma. We're thinking about a trip down that way to mushroom hunt. Isn't the big fungus fair in SFO coming up soon? We may time it to coincide with that.
