The Elegant Universe
    #2075924 - 11/06/03 03:28 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Tonight I watched a fascinating special on NOVA called The Elegant Universe, dealing with the string theory. I don't know if it will be airing again any time soon, but you can watch it online here. After my last few mushroom trips and the train of thought I've been in recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see this program. It tied a lot of things together for me personally, not to mention the beautiful special effects (although the dialogue was hokey at times...).

sweet  thanks for the link friend - I am going to watch it in my free time tomorrow.

The Elegant Universe is a book as well, on string theory. I have read the first few chapters, and I liked what I read.

The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory

There's the Amazon link. Check it out!
Peace.

I think anyone who is interested in the interconncectedness of the universe and it's component parts/forces should read that book and watch all parts of the series. It does help when you read the book to have some familiarity with physics and some related topics so that you can understand better what you are reading. I'm suprises actually that they plugged the book so heavily since very few people can relate to the theory contained therein.

The stuff in the book is pretty dumbed down as it is :smirk:

That being said, I highly reccomend both the book and PBS's mini-series (which I just watched yesterday online). I've read the book at least 7 or 8 times in the 3 or 4 years I've had it.

everyone should definitely read the book!! even though alot of it is most definitely theory and doesnt have all that much proof, its still extremely interesting stuff.

I was going to say that earlier, that I thought the author intended to make it so that anyone could pick it up and read it. I'm not too big on physics or anything, so I took it really slow and reread as I went to really understand it, as I really wanted to, and I was getting into it. I need to buy it, because I have only read like the first chapters, like before they even got into the new theories.
Peace.

i think the 3 hours pbs special could have been condensed down to 30 minutes. i would have like to seen more on super strings and the upper dimensions. i was talking to trendel last night on irc and he got me thinking: how could string, superstring, and M thoery relate to tgd theory? anyone have any thoughts on that?

I felt the same way! What a great special on NOVA-- I actually watched it twice. I recently got into astronomy. A good read is A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. I haven't finished it yet, so far no mention of String theory (lots of info on Black Holes).

I think many of us during particular "trips" in our lives feel like the world is connected through energy. Well at least, I do. String theory seems quite in line with this feeling of connectedness and energy.

Another aspect I found fascinating was the FERMILAB's experiments with particle smashing and the gravitron. The fact that we are possibly living on or near other dimensions, is incredible to think about. This might be one way to circumstantially prove this theory in our lifetime.

Interesting stuff!

how could string, superstring, and M thoery relate to tgd theory?

M-theory extends the concept of "strings" to p-branes of p dimensions.

ie: 2-brane is a plane, 3-brane is a sphere

TGD has as it's most basic element "surfaces" which are n-dimensional surfaces. In our case, 3-dimensional surfaces (sub-manifolds) stuck to an 8-dimensional "skin" which is the whole Universe.
