Osama bin Laden Can Only Hope for Four More Bush Years

Bush leaguer

U.S. president leading nation into deadly quagmire

By BILL KAUFMANN -- Calgary Sun

As the charred, corpses pile up in the fiasco he pined so petulantly for, George W. Bush calls it sweet progress.

The White House squatter, who refuses to visit hospitalized U.S. soldiers he's sent needlessly to their maiming, remains safely ensconced in his reality vacuum, trafficking in the narcotic of denial many of his countrymen seem happy to ingest.

To help them swallow, his administration has banned media pictures of flag-draped caskets returning from Iraq.

The world today is a safer place because of me, babbles this absurd little man, as yet another car bomb rends flesh and terrorist recruitment basks in its Bush boom.

Osama bin Laden can only hope for four more Bush years.

A pre-war Iraq devoid of terrorist attacks is now the new Beirut, complete with civil war; Bush was warned by his own agencies against bequeathing this costly gift but knowing better, his generosity's felt few bounds. Bringing peace to the Mideast through war really is the paradox it always appeared to be.

New heights of hatred of a rogue America is just jealousy, opines the oblivious "leader" who boasts of spurning newspapers in favour of "objective" news reports from close aides.

Even the bungling Donald Rumsfeld's private musings cast doubt on the merits and progress of the crusade.

And Rummy now talks of using diplomacy to combat terrorism, of winning "hearts and minds" in a "war of ideas."

Of course, they're just words, which pack as much substance from this bunch as an absent stockpile of WMDs.

Take Washington's latest kid-glove treatment of ally Israel, which earlier this month mounted raids on the Palestinian Gaza ghetto of Rafah, once again filling up hospitals mainly with dead and wounded civilians.

Impoverished residents were nearly crushed to death in their homes by rampaging Israeli bulldozers and shot at like rabbits as they fled. A missile lobbed into a crowd helped fill those hospitals.

Friends say Shadi Abu Elwan, 15, was murdered by an Israeli tank crew while helping a neighbour salvage furniture from the rubble left by attacks that rendered 1,700 homeless.

"It's sport, hunting," a neighbour of Elwan's told the Guardian newspaper's Chris McGreal. "What can a boy do to them in their tanks?"

For all that, the Israelis uncovered three smuggling tunnels.

None of the suicide bombers that have struck Israel have originated from Gaza, yet the Bush dismisses the atrocities by these terrorists with tanks as self-defence. Those hearts and minds are taking note.

Even Israel's top military man, Lt.-Gen. Moshe Yaalon, is more ready to state the obvious when last week he admitted his nation's actions "strengthen terror organizations."

Then there's Israel's security fence, which the Bush gang recently dubbed "a problem" in the cringing language specifically muted for its Israeli friends and their U.S. supporters.

The fence is now snaking through Palestinian land well beyond Israel's borders, cutting off farmers from their crops, and villages from one another.

Some of those who dare tend their fields are shot at.

Residents stranded by the fence are forced to apply for permits to access their own homes.

Only Jews or Israelis will be allowed to traverse land recently confiscated from their owners to make way for the wall.

Clusters of villages are being sealed into barbed-wire ringed cantons cleaved from their water and livelihoods, creating more Palestinian ghettos.

It's apartheid and ethnic cleansing rolled into one -- policies that lie at the root of the conflict.

To save the "road map" and win over hostile hearts and minds, surely the Bush administration would at least threaten to withhold this year's $9 billion in loan guarantees to Israel.

But no, the administration that speaks so loudly about Iraqi freedom doesn't give a fig about the hopelessness, oppression and rage in Palestine.

It's quietly dropped its opposition to the fence's meanderings, handing Ariel Sharon carte blanche to deepen the blood feud.

Then there's the failure to reprimand Lieut.-Gen. William Boykin's bigoted sandbox trashing of Islam.

Combine all of that with the administration's apparent exposure of a CIA agent working on the WMD file, and one gets the impression Rumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" against terror might be an understatement.

This seems pretty objective and impartial. Why don't I just go right ahead and belive it?

Sure, why not? Or you could debate some specific points it makes.

That is exactly how far I made it before I realized what a waste of time this article is. I really shouldn't have made it that far. I must be stoned.

Let's face it: Bush has already invaded two Muslim countries; as a result, there are more fanantics who now sympathize with Osama bin Laden and his methods of 'fighting' the United States. Four more years for Bush would further the jihadist movement. You cannot deny that the Iraq invasion shifted attention away from the peace process in Palestine.

Yes...unfortunately it goes somewhat off-topic.
