Wet Substrate
    #2074409 - 11/05/03 06:44 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

My mycellium started to grow just fine, infact, a few of the jars are almost fully colonized. However, the rest of the jars have stopped growing and I think it's because the substrate is too wet. There is no water on the bottom of the jars, but it does appear wet rather than moist.
My question is , is it too late? or can I just loosen the lids on the jars and let it dry ? or what?

using the PF Tek, brown rice flour, mixed properly, steamed the jars for an hour, lids were a little loose during sterilization.
No contamination whatsoever.

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated!

You may just have a gas exchange problem. If you still have tape over the holes on your jar lids, take it off. Then flip them upside down and leave them that way. This may help. It would be unwise to open the jars.

loosening the jar lids is a great idea for wet jars. Yes it is a risk, unless you room is disgusting though, if the lid is only open a crack and there is no draft in the incubator than you should be fine. My friends friends dog had trouble and thought he was going to have to throw away over 50 jars until the lids were loosend which saved everything. A good practice in the future is taping to rim to the lid so you can easily control how tight it is. Also, yes removing the tape is a very good idea.

I personally think your jars just need some O2. Take the tape off and put them lid down like Demiurge stated. You will see growth pick up in a couple days. Just be patient. In the past I've just waited until the jars colonized and sometimes it took forever to happen, now I just remove the tape and it works fast! GLuck. L8rs.
