    #2074224 - 11/05/03 05:43 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Ok i have a slight problem i have a few jars i want to case and were i live there exists no such things as ither vermiculit and coco coir. Now how wold i  go abouth casing the jars wath else can i use. I can order verm  buth it wold be a huge waste of money. Can you  use for example just perilite on top and botten mixed with calsium for casing layer  (not likely andvery messy) So wath i need is a few suggestions on alternative casing substrates our ill have to use mailorder.

No offense, but people in your country have pets, right? Call pet stores about coir...it's also relatively inexpensive online.

peat moss
cellulose insulation/egg cartons/recycled news paper
saw dust
cat litter
straw
horse manure
the list goes on . you want something that holds moisture and will breath, and is not prone to contaminate .

don't know why, but horse poo seems to resist bacteria .
it works pretty good as a casing as long as it's kept clean .
watch out for green mold .

On another note i thought casing layer had to be non nutrition al woldent at least saw dust straw and horse poo be nutritional to the shroom?

Ps. Che yes there are pets in my contrey bth for all those rabbits lizards and so on that wold use coir(wathever that is havent found a satesfying translation) they use straw our woodchips. I have never heard of anything to lay in the botten of your terrarium/pet cage made of coco sorry

yes, non nutritional is a "should be", mainly to avoid contams .
water retention and gas exchange are the must .
good news is a good brand of kitty litter, it's made of recycled news paper .
avoid additives as much as possable .
