Grafting of Ganoderma. * 2
    #20741609 - 10/23/14 05:20 AM (9 years, 5 months ago)

A while back I did some experiments with slicing up antlers and conks and sticking them back together to see what kind of forms I could grow. I did cross strain grafting as well as cross species. Cross species did not work at all and the cross strain graft was interesting.

The first experiment ultimately consisted of three separate pieces of the same strain stuck together, a base antler and a conk fragment were allowed to grow together for a few days until I sliced it in half and pinned in a second conk fragment that grew and fused over the course of probably two weeks. More or less perfect fusion.

My second experiment consisted of two different strains, my original strain and another strain I identified as also being Ganoderma resinaceum from North America.

A base antler was chosen from the other strain and I found a comparatively sized conk from my strain and fitted them together, they seemed to go well for a few days. Then I noticed a white blob coming out of the seam. Eventually I realized the grafted conk was not continuing to grow. So I decided to cut it in half to examine what was going on in there. The top part of the conk never really fused to the antler. But along the bottom they fused together and the antler seemed to grow its own pores over the other mushrooms pores.

I also tried the longshot of cross species grafting with G.resinaceum and G.applanatum, there was no success there.

My ultimate goal is to make something of a Ganoderma tree like you see in Asian artwork. In order to do that I need two grows going side by side, one producing antlers and one producing conks.

Beautiful stuff, Mrcloudy! I'd love to see you build a Ganoderma tree from grafted pieces. That would be pretty amazing.

Do you have a pic of a ganoderma tree?  Never seen something like that!

Ghiajake found this one, I had only seen them in old paintings and assumed that grafting was how they managed to do it so I started experimenting. Then he came across this and confirmed that was how it was done so now I know it can be done, and on the scale that I want to do it as well.

Are you sure?  Only the conks look like reishi to me, the tree part just looks like... wood or something?  Doesn't seem like reishi in antler form at all

A bit smaller scale. I do know that in China they tie antlers from different bags together and allow them to fuse, I am not sure how big they can get though.

do you have to use tape to hold them or do you just use properly shaped joints?

For my experiments so far antlers were able to be cut to fit, the conks required more support which a pin provided quite well. As long as everything is light the pieces should be able to be pinned together. One the pins are removed the mushroom fills in the hole like it was never there.
