yup, I like to add a layer of verm on the bottom of my quart jars to prevent so much seed sticking to the bottom, makes it easier to shake.

I also have a question.
What is a Tyvek? I mean is it a regular coffee filter?

Yes you could simmer it but you should catch the time they 're starting to explode in hot water .It can be after 30 mins or also 10mins.It depends on the grain .(min exploded kernels max water content)You can also soak first as deanofmean and add simmering to it .Try both and use what works best for u.

Ok I got a question/method for soaking birdseed. Some people have problems with seed germination. To prevent this I; soak the WBS in a container with lots of ice (maybe 6-8 hours worth of SOLID ice cubes). Once the ice melts. I strain the bird seed to get all the shit out of the water, then I repeat. I usually start in the morning, and PC the following morning.

comments?

I always change the water that I soaked it before simmering . It's good to wash and clean it a lot of times in the tapwater and after simmering be sure you wash it again until

I always change the water that I soaked it before simmering . It's good to wash and clean it a lot of times in the tapwater and after simmering be sure you wash it again until clean water flows off ;then drain for minimum 30mins before Pc .That's my tek. There are different ways but the germination of endospores is good when u soak before PC.

No need to simmer. A 10-12 hour soak works fine. You can try it if you really want to though.

Tyvek is not the same as a regular coffee filter. Do not use coffee filters as your only filtration disk. They are no very effective. You can get tyvek envelopes at any US post office for free. Just look for the "made with dupont tyvek" trademark somewhere on the envelope.

so what exactly would be the point of simmering for 30 mins if you can acheive the cleaning and the saturation of the seeds just by letting it soak overnight, or are they methods that are used independently of one another as a means of achieving cleanliness and saturation? thanks

They are usually just two different means to the same ends. I've heard that some grains don't soak as well, but birdseed is fine either way.
