uses for Tyvek?
    #2073869 - 11/05/03 06:06 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

about how many uses are there for Tyvek when colonizing and fruiting? My dad gave me a roll that is like 2.5 feet wide by 1000 feet long so i've got a good supply of it to use up. also, how is tyvek at retaining moisture when used as a filter or does tyvek not "breathe"? Thanks

The only two things I know of using it for are filter disks for jars of grain and for filtering air that enters your terrarium via an air pump or cool mist. You could also use it for pf jars, but it's not necessary.

Tyvek breathes relatively well, although slowly. It doesn't retain moisture very well at all and some people have problems with jars drying out. If you only have a small hole for gas exchange on your jars though, they stay moist enough.

good good, thanks. I was asking about the moisture retention because i want to let me incubation box breath while i'm away on vacation, I dont want the humidity to get too high and i want the jars to be able to breath while i'm away for like 8 days. Would it be smart to put down a little perlite too? thanks

I should probably also ask if i need the metal lid under the tyvek lid or will just tyvek attached to the mouth of the jar be sufficient? Thanks

You need the lid. The tyvek by itself provides too much gas exchange and your jars will dry out. drill one 1/4" hole in the lid and then a smaller one for your needle. Then, screw the lid down on top of the tyvek (it should thread over it okay). You inoculate through the small hole and tape over it. The 1/4'' hole is for gas exchange.

does it make any real difference whether you innoculate to the middle or to the sides? If it doesn't I could use the same hole for gas exachange and innoculation right?
