No its not. I think it's a better safe than sorry kind of thing.

Yup. Mostly for those folks living in places where the only PC you can get only goes up to 8 psi. I usually do 20 min at 20 psi.

I see a lot of bacteria.

How can you tell? The big one I'd have no problems believing is bacteria, but what's so obvious about the little one?

The first pick is a little blurry and I cant tell for sure what you have there but the second is all bacteria.

Again, that tells me nothing about how to spot it for myself. Any more information? By "the second" i assume you mean the second cup and not the second picture (with the whole plate covered in white).

The texture is the giveaway. It should be fuzzy. Like this.

Well if you se what you have on that second plate in the future you will know it is bacteria. Mycelium looks fuzzy or rope like. It is made up of thin white strands. Bacteria looks more liquid.

These plates have mostly bacteria but you can see a small amount of mycelium on top.

Interesting. I thought the small blotch did look fuzzy personally, but you'd know better. I will say it's kind of suspect that it's growing out there near the rim when I am sure I inoculated near the center.

Thank you. I've been able to notice white strands (rhizomorphic mycelium) in my jars, but nothing so far in these. The spec itself is smaller than a dime at this point so it's hard to tell.

fuzzy but the wrong kind, it's not cube mycelium it's some other mold

you should see radial growth from the center rather than concentric growth

Ok, so do I have to toss these things or can I salvage the containers? Also it's been 5 days and I don't really see shit on the others so should I restart all of them or what?

If those are pasty plates you can just wash them out with dish soap and use them again. I would give it more than 5 days before giving up on germination.

Pasty plates are just the glad Tupperware cups Pasty uses in OP? Then yes, they're Pasty plates.

I meant specifically for the contaminated ones. Do I need any special precautions with them? Everyone says NEVER open a contaminated BRF jar in the house so I want to get rid of these properly as well.

If there is mold that has sporulated then you can PC them for 30 min to kill it before you open it. Bacteria ain't much to worry about, soap and water.

Edmunter,

I can't see enough in to tell, but I don't think so since when I moved the plate around, no water splashed on the sides. But again, not sure.

Pudgy,

What'd you use to wipe? I don't want to risk infecting anything by wiping with unsterile objects.

I'd think a baby wipe, alcohol wipe or something similar. I used a sterilized napkin from the top of my container.

A mold can release spores without producing a fruit? The green splotch is like the size of a pea or something. I'll have to check it out, see what he's up to, and get rid of him. I want to look him in the eye before I kill him though. I ain't no bitch, chef.

I didn't even know mold wasn't considered bacteria until just now. *mind blown*

Mold is technically a fungus. They are considered imperfect fungi because the spores do not need to mate nor do they produce fruitbodies. However they colonize with a myc just like mushrooms do and usually the green or assorted colors are the spores. Most mold myc is grey. Some are white tho so just cause its white don't mean its clean.

Looks like a satellite. Be more careful and tighten up your procedure. The agar will teach you if you listen.
