Question about humidity and my chamber..
    #2072903 - 11/05/03 12:53 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Got a digital hygrometer a few days ago and have been trying to get to a stable humidity... For a few days it was stuck at 99 so the only way it goes down is if I have the lid half way off... now my question is, is this a contam risk that the terrarium lid is off to get the humidity

Are you saying that you only get 99% humidity when the lid is off? This doesn't make any sense. Restate your question.

Personally, I think hygrometers are silly. It is pretty easy to tell if it is humid enough in your terrarium by just looking at it.

What humidity level are you trying to achieve? If you are doing cakes 99% is fine. Do you have perlite or any other humidity source in your terrarium?

hmm... well 99% is good for the cakes, and 90% is better for the casings. The pmp setup with the perlite is usually used for cakes though. Casings don't really need the extra humidity. You don't want to keep the lid off though. That would definitely be a contam issue. If you insist upon lowering the humidity, then you just have to ditch the perlite, but your cakes will love the high humidity, and your casings will still fruit okay. It's up to you.

It sounds like your hydgrometer is broken, if it says 94% with no moisture on the sides.
There are nice digital ones on eBay that will tell you the temp and humidity.
Perilte should be fine but you want to make sure that your terrarium is air tight. There should be water on the sides.
