I used to wear one when i was being brought up catholic, but really, you think if jesus came back, he'd really want to see a cross?

Well gramps,
It's fairly innocent for Catholics to wear a cross... but when gangsta rappers start wearing them it turns into mockery.

I used to wear one. I dunno, I felt obligated to. Like I needed to show that I was religious. Religions such a crock. It's shameful that I didn't get that sooner. I'm soo happy I have though!

I think Jesus would want to see a golden calf badge affixed to the rear of every christian's automobile. That way he'd know who the new pharisees were right off the bat... and then he'd give me a fuzzy sticker and/or shiny button for thinking for myself. Then I'd share my ether with him and we'd talk about how much he hates the Neo-conservatives.

Christian's wear crosses (atleast this is my rationale) as an acknowledgement of the sacrifice that Jesus made for them on the cross. And to show an outward symbol of their faith.
I'd never thought of it the way you put it.
Personally, I dont wear a cross. I wear a heart pendant everyday.

maybe that's why he hasn't come back yet. he's waiting for us to get over it.

(priest, with thick irish accent): and do ye recognize what it is i'm holdin' over your heads now? (native american spokesperson): why, yes, it's a cross... a symbol of the quartering of the universe into active and passive principals... (priest, muttering): heathen savages! (conquisidor): what the father means is what the cross is made of --- gold! got any gold? (native american spokesperson): no, but we have corn... (other conquistidor): corn! now we can make tortillas! we been waitin' hundreds of years for this! (priest): oh by the way, domine domine domine, you're all catholics now ~ ~ (sort of from firesign theater's first album: "waiting for the electrician (or someone like him)" ...)

The symbol of the cross has mutated from an early equilateral form (that Orthodox still use, to denote The Center), to the Carolingian form (about 613 A.D. forward) when the cross piece moved from its central position upward, in order to represent the instrument of Roman torture-execution. Later still, the corpus was added to create the Roman Catholic crucifix. There are many cross forms associated with Christianity in some way. My Websters Collegiate Dictionary illustrates no less than 20: Latin, Calvary, patriarchal, papal, Lorraine, Greek, Celtic, Maltese, Saint Andrew's, Tao, pommee, botonee, fleury, avelien, moline, formee, fourchee, crosslet, quadrate and potent.
The central event and hence central symbol of Christianity is the Resurrection. This is a Mystery which is not representable, except by literalist illustrations of a resusitated Jesus with pierced hands (which ought to be wrists), feet and side - hardly a symbol for jewelry or centerpiece on steeple or altar. Hence, the cross. Seventh Day Adventists and some other Christian denominations do not use the cross. They say something like, 'If your loved one was executed by electrocution, would you wear a little electric chair around your neck?!' Of course, these people miss the deep symbolism of the One who was suspended between Heaven and Earth, between the Good thief and the Evil thief, who was at the center of the four cardinal points/elements as the Quintessential (Fifth Element), who was depicted as being between Sun and Moon and whose Heart Center poured out both Solar Blood and Lunar Water - Heart and Head, etc., etc., etc.

Keep away Superman? Whatever for? Superman kicks total ass!
I wouldn't be surprised if I will be faced with a kyrptonite crucifix now in one of my many dreams where I take on Superman's powers..
But yeah, the cross is a symbol. It is a lot easier for one to remain faithful if they have a constant symbol of their faith.. I'm surprised the church doesn't tattoo crosses into member's foreheads and hands... Peace.

I find it amusing that people wear them. I mean there savior (if you believe in that sort of thing) died on the cross. It would be like one of your best friends being shot or stabbed, so you wear a knife or gun pendant around your neck.
If you were really into the bible anyway, then people would see that wearing the cross is basically a form of idolatry anyway. (putting faith in objects).
Anyway, my 2 cents.

The cross is an instrument of death. Most Christians wear it to symbolize Christ's resurrection from death. I do not personally wear crosses because it is like wearing an electric chair on your neck. I would just much rather wear witness beads.

"It would be like one of your best friends being shot or stabbed, so you wear a knife or gun pendant around your neck." yes, thats exactly the point.
"when gangsta rappers start wearing them it turns into mockery. " I bet thats pretty much the point too.

"Such a weird belief. Lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. You think when Jesus comes back he's gonna want to see a fucking cross, man?" -Bill Hicks
Jesus, upon coming back: "Hey, look, it's the thing I got nailed to and slowly died on! Great to know you believe in me!" *Most* Christians are morons as is and closed-minded as ever.

Hehe, I really don't think that Jesus is the type to be afraid of seeing a cross just because he died on one... he's got more important things to tend to. Peace.

by the way, that bill hicks isnt it? i love his shit....
back to the topic at hand, i dont think i have anything to say that hasnt already been said....but am reminded of something i found funny a while back
a while ago, there is this little peice of cloth that was supposedly part of the clothing of this saint that spoke with mother marry or something, i dunno the whole story....
anyway, it was on display here in arizona, and people flocked to it, waiting hours just to get up and look at this old crusted up peice of cloth....it was encased in this glass holding case, with guards on either side, and people prayed to it, kissed the glass walls of its container....there was an article about it in our paper, it had an interview with a chick that went there she said that she asked the peice of cloth to put out the fires in california....thats right, didnt ask god, but the CLOTH!
i dunno i found this kinda funny....i thought there was a comandment that said not to be doing this shit?
or does that only apply to people of OTHER religions that pray to earthly objects?
