Emergency beacon & GPS ideas

Any recommendations for these two items? SPOT gets pretty shitty reviews overall and it doesn't really seem like anything is that great. Regarding GPS, is there an android tool to use for waypoints and such that doesn't require service? I'm guessing no. Ideas here? I'm getting into winter mountaineering and route finding via following a trail is less than ideal.

A handheld GPS is much more reliable; it will have longer battery life, be more accurate and is generally more user friendly. You can get a Garmin handheld GPS for a tidy price.
As far as emergency beacon goes, a GME PLB would be good although I have a feeling that a 406mhz GPS EPIRB would be a better unit to have. Only reason for this thought is that an EPIRB is required to go out to sea in a vessel, however a PLB is not sufficient despite being recommended for people to carry on them in case of going overboard. The only drawback to the EPIRB is carrying around a bulky contraption that weighs a couple pounds whereas the PLB will fit in your pocket and is probably just under a pound in weight. An EPIRB may be slight overkill for hiking.

Yeah. I was thinking the Spot 3 at first but the low transmission signal and spotty communication makes it seem more harmful than good. The ResQlink+ seems to be the best for actually getting rescued. A few pounds is way too heavy

I don't know anything about resqlink but GME stuff is pretty good. If you're carrying a backpack then I couldn't imagine that the EPIRB would make much difference in weight
