Effectiveness of varying substrates?
    #2071330 - 11/04/03 11:10 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I'm a first time grower, and now I am finally getting started. I've done my research, sent out the order form to Ralph, and I am going tomorrow to pick up supplies.

Anyway, my question is - Does the effectiveness of the common substrates (brf, rye, whole wheat) differ a notable amount? I have been unable to find brf at several local stores, however whole wheat flour is readily available. I might also be able to obtain long grain brown rice.

Also, any quick suggestions for a newb? I've already ordered the PES Hawaiian strain, along with the free mystery strain for November. The supplies I will be getting is pretty much the bare minimum, but I am following the teks pretty closely.

I've read a lot of information and I've been lurking around the forums for the past couple of days. Sorry if I come across annoying newb who asks redundant questions.

Anything you grind yourself tends to work better the a pre-ground flour. Can't say the differences between brf, rye,and whole wheat myself. Brf is by far the most common though. You can't go wrong with it. If you want to grind it yourself you can buy some long grain brown rice and run it through a cheap coffee grinder.

I always have sucess when I grind my own BRF, I don't know why, but twice I bought pre-ground BRF and the jars didn't really go at all, a few started after a few weeks but than stopped at about 45%. So now I grind my own BRF, and it seems to work a hell of a lot better, give it a try.

I agree. I highly recommend that you go to an organic food market of some nature and buy some long grain brown rice. Grind it yourself. You will not be dissapointed with the results. I never have.

Great, thanks for the replies! I will definitely give that a try. Do I have to use a coffee grinder? I don't have one of those, but I'll try to pick up a cheap one if necessary.
