Phaeolepiota aurea - pics
    #2071309 - 11/04/03 11:05 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

One of the most impressive species I found last week. The specimens were unmistakeable but disappointingly small. This is usually a spectacular fungus. It is not closely related to Lepiota, despite the name, and in fact has no known close relatives, as far as I know.

This is a very rare species in the UK

Very nice. An excellent find.

A distinctive but rare mushroom.

Incidentally, there have been a number of poisonings attributed to it. Many people experience stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting after eating them, so they are not recommended for eating, even though there are books that say they are good to eat.

Oddly, they have the highest levels of Hydrogen Cyanide recorded in any mushroom - on the order of double the levels found in Marasmius oreades. The HCN is not believed to be a factor in the poisonings.

Happy mushrooming!

Cool, I did not know about the high HCN content or the poisonings.  I think this might be a rarer species here than in N. America?  None of my shroomy friends seemed to know much about it, except that one of them had enjoyed eating it.  Sounds like he got lucky ...

If you are into rare shrooms, I have some more delights in store as soon as I'm allowed to upload more pics

Based on what I've read it does seem to be rarer in Europe than the US. Oddly, it appears to be most common here in Alaska.

Not everybody get sick from eating it, but some people do. That's why it just gets a "not recommended" label. On the other hand, some of the mushrooms they've recently put that label on are mushrooms I've been eating and enjoying for years. Tricholoma flavovirens (=Tricholoma equestre) is now being given that label, and I've eaten lots of them for years.

Show us more rare ones!

Happy mushrooming!
