I can't case directly over Perlite can I? I want to case my tupperware bins (huge ones) wall to wall, is there a way to do that with a perlite layer on the bottom? Thanks

You won't need it. If you use a big rubbermaid "roughneck" or something similar, and use the whole thing for a casing, you won't need perlite. The humidity from the moist substrate/casing will keep things right. You'll just need to mist it.

whats the general rule for depth of a bulk substrate? Does it make a difference if its 4-5 inches deep or 2-3 inches deep?

The deeper the better. Over 6 inches is a bit excessive though, and anything less than 2 inches is getting a little too thin.
