i love tyvek but......

i am having some troubles with my jars dying out. some do and some don't getting a 5 out of 10 success rate now. this is to low and considering i am losing none to contams and just getting dry grains i need to fix this up.
i use tyvek as the lid, just the band and the tyvek. saw that things were getting dry on previous runs and started to tape over the tyvek lids, just leaving a little exposed for air exchange. still had trouble with the drying. maybe i just need a tiny bit exposed.
i really like the tyvek for the no contam deal and also the ease (can just shoot liquid myc right though), would rather get it to work right than mess with polyfill.
so if anyone out there uses this setup let me know the best ways please.
should i use better tape, just using the standard 3m tape now. or is there a better way?
thanks for any info.

You should just drill a single 1/4" hole on the top of your jars, or 4 small holes to fit a syringe through. Then use your tyvek over the dome lid. YOu should be fine.
ANother thing would be to increase your rH in your incubator. Using a large igloo "cooler" and a fish-tank-heater in a jug of water keeps things pretty damp in there.

drill one hole big enough for the needle, one that's 1/4th hole. tape the one you shoot through if you want to be extra careful

I have found tyvek with 1/4 inch holes tend to get a little dry with wbs, so I switched to polyfill and have never looked back. Polyfill is the shit IMOA!

I thought tyvek was waterproof. I've not had any problems with tyvek-covered jars drying out (I use tyvek under the ring...no lid at all) but I have also only been using grains and tyvek-capped jars for a short while. Previous efforts used PF-style jars.
Also, incubator has a tight-fitting lid so perhaps it holds in the humidity.
Anyone care to add more? Is tyvek waterproof?

Try putting the tyvek under the lid.. It keeps 'em plenty moist. I just screw the regular lid over the tyvek, and puncture the tyvek 4 times when I inject spores..

You know, agar, you really should just get the Shroomery logo at the top of every page replaced with the jar picture.

Waterproof? - Yes. Water can seep through though. Only when under pressure
I'd do Rye and liquid myc.
A foaf's jars take only 7 days to colonize...
My guess is you're loading them not wet enough...Maybe something wrong w/ your soaking times...?

As others already mentioned, you are exposing a too great area of the surface of the tyvek, thus it is drying out. Only drill a 1/4 inch hole in the lid.

I use tyvek then the lid with a 1/4 inch hole in the center with polyfill threw that. The poly fill helps keep anything from commgn three and asllows the jar to breathe just enuff.
also if ur having dry problems its not the tyvek. Like you said gnostic its prolly soaking/simmering time. what grain are you using?
I use WBS because IMHO its the best yet. I soak it for usualy 10 hours (over nite) and then simmer for 30 mins on low-medium heat (gas stove) and thats bene perfect for... 2 grows so far no probs #3 jars in incubation now

I always use just tyvek and the lid on my BRF/verm jars and they never dry out, EVER. I do use a TiT and whenever I check them I have condensation all over the inside of the tub, so the humidity is good in there

If the air is too dry in the TiT, just add some hydroton or perlite.......
