withdrawing from the senses.
    #2070997 - 11/04/03 09:45 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

alright... i'm about halfway through the bhagavad gita, and there's some stuff in there i'm really not understanding.

1. what's this talk of withdrawing from the senses "like a turtle withdraws into its shell"?

2. what does it mean to perform action as sacrifice?

I think the idea is to find out what these things mean by way of your own personal evolution. Nobody's supposed to tell you these things. Ram Dass was taught by a guy with a chalkboard, and the guy wrote things on the board one by one untill each wisdom is taken in.

Now, I know nothing of the subject, but to myself and my knowledge, "withdrawing from the senses" sounds like shutting them down, or rather, not allowing their inputs to register in our mind.

Basically, not seeing, hearing, tasting, or feeling although all of those senses are still functioning properly.

I guess it would take a lot of mental conditioning to block out our senses, but I could definitely see some benefits of doing so.

Now, about the sacrifice thing. I guess it could mean that the actions that you carry out always carries the intentions of being a sacrifice to whatever. Not really sure on this one, but like every time you took a breath it could be a sacrifice to God or maybe me...
Peace.

Okay, I'll take a stab at this.

1. what's this talk of withdrawing from the senses "like a turtle withdraws into its shell"?

The Ivory Tower of the mind. It's about finding your self/center. It's about turning off the world and delving in introspection.

2. what does it mean to perform action as sacrifice?

Hmm... this is a little more vague, but...
Maybe it means that one should know exactly what they're doing at all times. It's about mindfulness. Perform every action you make with a conscious mind, for every action should be treated with as much respect as a sacrifice [to the Gods].
