Of course the regulation of compatibility by mating type genes is only one level at which compatibility is controlled. If you want to explore within- and between-strain matings of monokaryons you should also read up on what is known about systems that regulate self-recognition, somatic incompatibility systems, and the functional context of genome co-operation / conflict.

I also find it helps to learn about the sometimes very different mating systems of other mushroom species to get a better idea of what P. cubensis in particular is doing.

By the way all you people who are experienced with mating single-spore cultures - WHAT IS YOUR METHOD OF SINGLE SPORE ISOLATION???

I am using a very laborious method (dilution, streaking, incubating, finding germinating spores under microscope, cutting out germinating spores on agar discs using spore cutter device, transferring, etc). What is everyone else doing?????
