I read though you can keep it alive the genetics get weak over time so flowering  and probably cloning would not be optimal.

Old heads have kept moms of special cuts for years and years.

Clones and clones from clones retain their potency. Single lines have been reproduced asexually by cloning for more than 20 years with no loss of potency or odor/taste.

i don't really think they look like cannabis at all, firstly the stem is a much stronger than what cannabis usually gets

If allowed to keep growing cannabis stems CAN get rather thick and woody. Just like most plants.

Especially during flowing.  Then you cut back the flowers for harvesting and leave the thick branch work (just like you would with a tree bonsai), and leave a few tiny flowers to reveg giving you plenty of choices of which tips to keep and train and which to cut off.  Actually cannabis would make a great bonsai specimen, because of it's speed of growth and ability to be trained and recover from training. As well as the ability to seem "aged".

My first time seeing someones grow I couldn't believe how much like wood it looked. Even looked like cracked bark.
