anyone else see this story on the news. some scientists grafted tobacco roots onto a tomato plant and the tomato leaves had nictotine in them, they suspect the actual tomato does too. I tried looking for a link but couldnt find one. i thought this was worth metioning though. hooray for super plants, i want to see somebody graft some mimosa roots to a marijuana plant ohhh the possiblities

Tobacco and tomato are in the same family (Solanaceae) along with datura, potatoes and capsicum Cannabis and hops are the only plants in the Cannabaceae family so I doubt you could graft them onto anything else.

I have never heard this. And on top of that tomatoes and the tomato leaves that have nicotine in them is not possible. Nicotine is a cellular product, just because a tomato plant is on a tobacco root stock won't make it have nicotine because the tomato plant would have to change it's genes, or the root stock somehow change the tomato plant genes to make nicotine as nictoine is cellular chemicals found locked up vacuoles that are not conducted around the plant like nutrients.

I don't believe it, plus tomato plant leaves are poisonous or at least make you really sick, so its useless anyway cause the fruit is the only edible part.

If the graft even takes.. just because they're all solaneaecous plants doesn't mean they're graft compatable, intergenera grafting as well as breeding is hard. And again alkaloids are cellular products and remain in the cell. Also why is foxnewschicago the only one to carry this info. The story itself isnt' even self consistent.
Now if gene splicing and PCR and all sorts of other stuff were to take place, or even adding plastids to bacteria and infecting plant cells with it is possible, but grafting and expecting cellular metabolitic alkaloids to be present from the root stock into the scion, then no.

According to http://www.sensir.com/s_Applications/appnotes/app030.pdf nicotine is created in the roots and transported to the leaves This whole thing seems pretty pointless though considering nicotine is destroyed in the stomach, and what are you going to do with tomatoes other than eat them?
