Here is how to do a basic ANOVA or Analysis of Variance Test.

This may be useful for collecting the data to compare.

I would be interested in attempting to complete one of these problems. I am taking statistics right now and this kind of thing will soon become the topic of our discussion.

This has to do with comparing central tendencies of several sets of data, does it not?

Indeed. The ANOVA is used to analyze the differences between group means and their associated procedures.

I feel like this is a method of calculation for descriptive statistics?

Do you mean, it is used to describe sets of data by using the differences between their means and procedures? What exactly do you mean by procedures?

Yeah, you find the mean's of the groups and determine whether they are either positively or negatively correlated I do believe.

How does that have anything to do with comparing the averages?

Spearman's Rho is used to look at correlational coefficients, is it not?

Ah, so we are comparing the means of the group. Generally speaking.

I have most of this equation figured out, I think.

I am not sure about the degrees of freedom quite yet.

Can you do it?

ANOVA and nearly all statistical tests employ measures of central tendency (typically the mean) and measures of variability (typically variance and standard deviation). The mean is involved in measures of variability because they measure how the scores in a distribution are dispersed around the mean.

In ANOVA we are testing for the difference between several means. Examples would be control group, experimental group one and experimental group two, or mean income of Americans of German vs Irish vs Polish descent. The simplest way to think about analysis of variance (ANOVA) is that you are comparing the two components of total variation. That is, you are comparing the within group variation and the between group variation. If within group variation is comparatively large, then group membership is less important. If between group variation is comparatively large then group membership is important.

ANOVA can only tell you if there are significant differences between group means. The test itself doesn't tell you what the differences are. The Null hypothesis is that there are no differences between the means. The Alternative/Research hypothesis is there is a difference. If we reject the null hypothesis then all the means might be different, or some might be the same and one is different, etc.

Thanks for the clarification, Brian Jones.

There will be more statistics to come.

Come back and join in the discussions!

I have been looking at a 3 group experiment for rosemary on cognition. It's not something really important to me, but the basic setup for the experiment is rudimentary and so I want to play around with it - even with small samples.
