>mySQL has so many limitations it's practically useless from what I remember.

ahhh, that must be why its one of the most popular db servers eh? =P not saying it dosnt have its share of troubles here and there, but its used as much as it is for a reason.

> mySQL has so many limitations

Like lack of foreign keys, subselects, and transactions? You don't need foreign keys, though they are nice for cascading deletes... you don't need subselects, just a little bit more code.... and you now have transactions (commit/rollback) if you are using berkeley style tables. Other than that, mysql has everything that you need.

The last time I had to purchase an oracle licence for a web server application (back in '99), it cost us just under one half million, USD. We had to licence every single web connection that had the potential to access the database... at 200 possible connections... you can do the math. MySQL is 100% free. Unless you are an airline or a bank, I don't see how the few features you loose with MySQL is worth over $10,000 per connection to the database.

For the people here to learn... SQL is a computer language, not a program. The QL stands for query language. You make a query, using SQL, to a database. Common databases are oracle, mysql, msql, sql server, access, sybase, postgres, dbase2, etc...

> not saying it dosnt have its share of troubles here and there

The only problem I have ever seen with MySQL has been when the machine crashed and the tables were not closed properly. This will be a problem on any database, but MySQL has more problems than most because of the lack of transaction tables and raw filesystem support.

The problem that we were having at the shroomery was not caused by MySQL, but rather by a 3rd party library that MySQL was using.

Doesn't MYSQL also not have support for real stored procedures? Thats a pretty big drawback IMHO....

> Doesn't MYSQL also not have support for real stored procedures?

You can use compiled procedures and dynamically load them, but it doesn't have oracle oci type procedures. There are many more functions available that work within selects than any other database I have ever seen, which does help a lot... but you are correct, the lack of stored procedures is a shortcoming, which I forgot about. MySQL also doesn't support views, which took me a while to get used to... (Almost all my experience with mysql is in the 3.x version... I don't know much about the 4.x feature set)
