Superflat!
    #2067173 - 11/03/03 04:53 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Having been relatively "out of the loop" regarding the direction of contemporary art in the last decade, I decided to start perusing the various resources, and get my self up to date. In my research journeys I have kept running into this Tokyo-based art movement called, "Superflat."

It seems to be a late ?90s Japanese extension of American Pop Art of the late 60s. However, where Pop Art had a certain cool irony to it, Superflat has developed a sense of hyper-irony that could only come from that postmodern fantasy land called Tokyo. Indeed the arc of Japanese culture of the last hundred years has been extremely hyperbolic, and this movement seems to fit right in.

Although comprising several artists, Superflat, is largely the brainchild of Takashi Murakami, who both coined the term and wrote the movement?s manifesto. He operates a Warholian-style "factory" in which is visions are carried out by a small army of artists.

Judging by the number of his works I have seen in contemporary art auction catalogs of late, and the price they are fetching, I would say the movement is quite successful -- more so than the Neo Geo movement of the late ?80s, anyway... :smirk:

Some examples:

Mr. DOB -- a sort of Anime Mickey Mouse. An emblem of Japanese "Cute Culture."

In subsequent works, Mr. DOB undergoes some amazing transformations pushing the boundaries of the symbolism of "cute," becoming a mere assemblage of bright eyes and happy mouths -- an abstract grouping of signifiers which are referential of cuteness.

In the "Chaos Series," the formula for "cute" becomes a more complex and the boundaries are stretched to an ironic degree. In fact, the works begin to take on a nightmarish quality, albeit a damn cute nightmare!

It should be pointed out that the name, "Superflat," does not merely refer to the planar and linear qualities of the artworks, but to their societal reference vector -- it is a cultural critique.

After all, not all of the works are "flat."

I love contemporary art. Its my favorite type of art. most of the people here seem to just be into "trip" art like fractals and stuff. Ever heard of Roxy Paine?

I love Roxy Paine! That's so ironic that you would mention his name because I was just talking about him in a pm to papaver earlier. The first time I saw his works I was tripping at an art show and was in complete awe! I must have stared at his pieces for hours. He has to be doing the most innovate psychedelic influenced artwork around right now.

Awe, man! I didn't get your PM -- was it a reply to my PM about your use of Damien Hirst in your avatar -- I wonder why I didn't get it? Can you resend it? :frown:
