It's all about the coal.

If it's "all about the oil" then why do we need it so very very badly when we use so very very little of it?
Over half our energy comes from coal, but less than 3% comes from oil.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/25opec/sld027.htm
"Coal is an integral part of any solution to our country's energy predicament. Coal accounts for more than half of the electricity generated in the country. It is our most abundant domestic energy resource. One quarter of the entire world's known coal supplies are found within the United States. In terms of energy value (Btus), coal constitutes approximately 95 percent of the United States fossil energy reserves. Our nation's recoverable coal has the energy equivalent of about one trillion barrels of crude oil - comparable in energy content to the entire world's known oil reserves. At present consumption rates, U.S. coal reserves are expected to last at least 275 years."

It doesn't seem to me that we need oil as much as some people would like to believe.

that's just saying where we get electricity from. it says nothing for how much oil is used by automobiles, aircraft, trains, trucking, heating, plastics, asphalt; all of them applications for which coal is pretty useless.

Electricity can do anything oil can do, and probably will within the next 10 years.

that's a good point. with fuel cells alot more can be done with electricity.
they still can't be used to fly airplanes; they'd still have to use fuel for that.
also, we use oil for more than just an energy source. plastics, synthetic rubber, and road paving materials are all made from oil.

Hopefully we will find a way to get the energy out of it without releasing trillions of tons of CO2 in the process.
