So here I am, I am a SCAB...
I work my regular job but now I do it behind a picket line full of former friends who all are brainwashed by the union.
The issue... Health Care.
The Targer... Big Business.
Should it be the burdon of big business to cover the cost of health care? What about the unions? With over 1.4 million members paying an average of $30 a month for "membership", dont you think that they could do something more than make workers lose their jobs and strike?
While the UFCW (my former union) has brought in over $42,000,000 a MONTH they have done NOTHING to fight against the riseing cost of health care in this contry...
WHAT GIVES????
I pay my dues. I do my work and I do extra because I love my job and I love my company...... Soooo what do I have to show for it?
Forced UNION membership. NO say in what my membership dues go towards. A union that would rather lie to me and hurt my company than rock the boat called congress...
Didnt unions start only beacuse nation wide change need to be made? Arent unions here to make things better for people nation wide?
I ask you this.... Why arent unions doing a damn thing about the riseing cost of health care in the US and why are they takeing the cost out on the companies.

I was a member of the notorious CUPW (Canadian Union of Postal Workers) for seven years in the Seventies. I was even a shop steward for the last few years I worked at the post office. I therefore probably have more firsthand knowledge of unions than most who post here.
Unions are generally at least as corrupt as government. How does that old clich? go? Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely? The labor union of today is a far cry from the labor union of a hundred years ago. I'll never be a member of another union as long as I live. It isn't worth it.
Having said that, I won't scab either -- for purely pragmatic reasons. You put yourself (and your family) too much at risk by doing that. The police and courts are not really very good at protecting you from union reprisals.
As for the issue of this strike -- health insurance -- I have no experience with that, since Canada has socialized medicine. It sucks hugely, but hey -- it's "free".
Should big business be forced to pay health insurance for their workers? Nope. If they choose to do so, in order to be a more attractive employer, that's their business.
Should unions pay for health insurance for their members? If the membership decides they should, and is willing to pay enough union dues to cover the costs, and have the ability to opt out of the plan with a corresponding reduction in dues, then sure.

Doesn't sound a whole lot different from the average run of the mill American labor union to me. Sucks, doesn't it?
Sounds like you've got a career decision ahead of you. Good luck with it.
