Never heard of Cubes with black caps before and thats the typical mushroom that is sold from dealers. I have seen Pans that have a blackish cap to them....but this is rare. You should ask what species they are.

are they dried?
they can look black from spores if harvested a little late. nothing wrong with those ones. Did he grew the shrooms? maybe you should ask him.

thats what i was thinking, maybe spores. but you can tell if the cap is covered in spores, they should wipe off rather easily even if dried. i would say check out some pictures of psilocybe cubensis on this site and see if they look like what you got, then take it from there.

Yeah they are dried and i don't think they were grown because there are little blades of grass on a few of them.

If they blued then they would not be l black. Copelandia and paanaeolus are black. If someone gave you black shrooms then they were probabaly old and rotted when picked.
Blue ringers are a bwornish color when dried. I ahve posted im,ages of trhem. check ,y site for P. stuntzii and see if any look similar to yours. They are from lawns. The baeos would be blue, not black.

well, some caps of the Azures I harvested last year turned really blue and because of the usual color of the cap it was more like a dark blue/green. and when they dried they almost look black. this was just some caps, not the stems.

Make sure you trust the guy you got these from. Who knows what he could be giving you. Better safe than sorry.

I think MJ has the right idea here. I've often found black nasty ass shrooms in the field that I don't even pick cause they are all rotting and gross.

Trading reminds me of this local haole on Maui at Kamaeoli one beach who bought a seal-a-meal baggie with oreganoo and elmers gluye in it. He was so pissed he sold it to a local Samoan who came back in about ten minutres after purchasing it and thrashed the guy pretty bad.
I really would not even trade bad shrooms to someone else. This is not good karma.

my friend has some koh samui with caps that are nearly black. they are dried. the stems are the regular cubensis appearance but the caps definitely turned very blackish. is this a problem? should cubensis caps never turn black when dried?

This is probally not true with all rotted/expired shrooms, but I have found it to be definite in the expired shrooms I have encounted. Look under the cap and look for tiny whitish oval lookin things. Rotting mushrooms usually become the home of tiny little white maggot worms. They would be dried out and dead by now since the shrooms were dry but if you happen to find these things scattered within the gills, then you can definately conclude the shrooms were rotten.
