would dead myc still protect again contams?
    #2064990 - 11/02/03 03:00 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

a friend had a tragic heater problem where some of the myc died, now the myc has regrown over all the unexposed area and is working on the dead myc. If he was to birth this cake that is kinda fully colonized would contams be an issue?

Dead mycelium will rot. The fungi might overtake the dead mycelium, but it's definately a contamination issue.

It might be better to fruit it in the jar, or else you could really carefully cut everything that looks remotely sketchy out of the cake and then fruit it.

There isn't a problem with it because it's in a sterile jar. Dead mycelium, however, can't produce antibodies, so when you expose it to an unsterile environment it will rot (bacteria eats it.)

The live mycelium will try and "eat" the dead mycelium, or reincorporate it's nutrients to protect against this, but if there's a good-sized spot of dead mycelium exposed to the world it will likely rot pretty quickly.

mycelium produces antibodies? wow, pretty impressive. The reason why he wants to birth the cake is cause it started to grow a few shrooms. There is currently a nickle sized patch on the top that has dead mycelium and the live stuff is closing in fast.
