this is a high ballast 400w metal halide with a glass reflector, it only cost me $90! im so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this thing is huge, it came out of an old store. i re-did the ballast and now it runs on 120v.
im wondering if this could be used to grow salvia, in a 8x8 area, or if the light would be too intense?

I got a 430 watt hps growing salvia now but here what i did. -----O------- Light 430hps ------------- Platic sheet on small wooden frame V V V V V V V Pots And plant in them Distance: Light to plants 23 inchs Light to plastic sheeting 8 inchs Plastic sheet to plants 2-8 inchs Temps 55-70 Humitidy 45-80 (After i mist the humitidy goes up 20-50% or more I dont have a light meter but its been 2 weeks and the plants are doing fine about 1/2 inch growth a week. The plastic layer is about 5mm (milimeters) thick with 3 layers of it to dampen the light. My grow room is 3.8 feet/4 feet. Just to know i had the light about 3 feet from the plants with no plstic beween them and they were cooking the leafs they were curling and some browing at the tips. I will slowly get my plant use to the more light cut down on the misting and up the ferdlizer. The plant seem to like it the leafs are noticable thicker and when i dry them it turns out to be a lighter green that the older leaf matter i got.

the plastic might be okay depending how translucent it is not... but after some time it's gonna degrade and you're gonna need more plastic, shade cloth is best. That's why after some time if you've seen greenhouses that are made out of plastic that sit outside, after a few years they re-plastic them..

i had this vision of a good grow chamber.
get a wooden box, probably 8x8x4 that should spread the light enogh so that it dosent burn the plants too much
paint the sides wite, tile the bottom put a 1/2 inch thick piece of plexiglass to keep some of the heat and humidity in,
there will be 8 1, in vent holes, 4 on the ground and four on top, so that the heat from the lamp will cause some decent air exchange
this system may or may not be a hydroponic system, that hasnt yet been decided.
any recomendations?

Dang. 400w HPS is enough for about 30 square feet of salvia.

zippoz, if you go with the grow chamber idea use opaque plexiglass to remove some of the intensity of the light. Other than that it sounds like a good idea, but since it is legal in your country why would you cultivate it indoors? Why not use that big halide in the sky?

plexiglass is heavy ,costly and you can just nail to the the frame. What to ia a 4 sided box, floor 3 sides 1 side left open. 2 of the sides were made from chipboard this stuff sucks it was like a sponge for humidity could not keep it up enought. so i stapled plastic to the sides it help. If you got the room 8x8 i things of filling it with some other plant.

Nah, it will be fine. Mine have been growing under 600 watt HPS for at least a month now from outdoors and they're doing great. Never been happier, no humidity no nothing. Maybe they're just used to it though.

zippos, the computer fans (4 in total) are just for upper canopy air movement. Under the NFT is 2 x 8" squirrels to end capped & slitted PVC pipes that blow air up into the bottom canopy through the gaps in the channels of the NFT table. They're also on a dimmer, so when the plants are small, the flow is weak, and when they're full size, all the way. Then there's 2 x 30 cubic meter a minute fans. One pushes air in, the other extracts it out. They're on dimmer switches too, so as it progresses, I increase the volume of air pull -- but it's governed by a RH/Temp monitor. All the same, it's loud in volume in there so the walls are skinned in R4.0 insulation to kill the noise. I don't use Co2, I just rely on high air exchange & ambient air movement, no stale zones.
dtivr6mk4 & zerohead, thanks.
As for the inaugural question of the thread, never use shadecloth in a grow. You paid for the HID & you will in lumens vis watts burned forever after, so spread it. Indoor-grows cost too much to the m.sq capital installation to entertain outdoor paradigms. For what it's worth, I use a light rail on the 400w MH and there's been no yellowing on mother/stock-plant Salvia as per what I had sitting in the rez of the mother Cannabis ebb & flow crate. Not there atm, as it was chopped up and turned into a number of cuttings.

how much does a 400w cost to run 24 hours a day, 365 a year?
