Almost 4 weeks in at a steady 70 degree cooler. They seem dried out on top and a little yellow and grey in some areas. Would love some experienced help as I am first timer.

Thanks, I bleached the shot out of it.  It doesn't have to smell bad to be contaminated I guess?

We're you handling them alot? definitely leave them alone when colonizing. Cause any contams in the top layer of verm will make it to the rice flour.

The Problem with PF TEK with pint jars is that contams often outrun the mycellium. In half pint jars it can get fully colonized faster.  That's what I've read at least.  Follow the teks above and you'll crush it next round bud

Bad idea. Will most likely hinder gas exchange and stifle their growth.  You want your holes to be exposed with the dry layer of verm to protect from contams.  Watch/Read the links I sent

Or polyfil lids or tyvek or sfd's or micropore tape.  There are lots of ways to skin a cat, but covering your holes with regular tape is a bad idea.  Do more homework and you'll have more success

painters tape is very porous. prolly equal to masking tape. I find it hard to imagine that it restricts ge

It's waterproof and paint proof.  I find it hard to believe it would be adequate for GE.  Masking tape isn't adequate either.  I dunno where you got that info.

I did a search to see if any info was on it.  RR says no.  Not that he's always right, but I'd have to see some proof before I ever recommended painters tape.  If it worked people would use it more I feel like.  You are more than welcome to prove me wrong though.  I'm all about learning something new.

Why anyone would choose a paper thin filter over a thicker one is beyond me......why not use polyfill or sfds?

Tyvek is also for the most part waterproof/paintproof. I use tyvek suits for tank diving all the time. But I say it's not gas restrictive because well you can breathe through it or force air through it. anything you can force air through will not restrict gas exchange. While it is inferior to SFD material and i would recommend to anyone to use something else. It works  It's weird RR would say that. maybe im remembering wrong but i swear he said to use masking tape or micropore tape in his video. I'll have to rewatch.

Confirmed "you can use masking tape or either Microspore Tape to cover the holes." - RR's video

Again there is better shit and tape tears easy leaving open contam vectors so it's not a good idea. I just say it doesn't restict GE

it really doesn't matter much for brf mang. the dry verm layer will do most of your contam stoppage. don't handle your jars though. Everytime that dry verm layer moves you are moving contams around on top of your cake. just cover the holes to keep moisture/steam from getting into the jar during sterilization you don't want that dry verm layer to get wet. when you move on to grains/lc etc then you can get some proper SFD/polyfil.

Baby p I always used a tyvek ring I cut out of a mailing envelope cause its water proof and breathable but I understand its not necessary w a verm layer but your def needing those holes to breathe adequately to release co2 and other gases that are put off. Think of it as ur exhaust in ur car gotta expel the gases or it shuts down.

Having trouble posting new thread> I searched "cracked jars " in forum and came up blank. Hopefully someone can answer... Three or four of my six jars cracked in pressure cooker. I didn't notice and inoculated. I only noticed on my first check a week later. Only seeing mycelium in one jar at this point. Do I throw away cracked jars? They are just hairline cracks. Thanks all for putting up w me and all your help so far..
