possible chaga look alike and something else
    #20627369 - 09/27/14 06:49 PM (9 years, 4 months ago)

Found of a bunch of these. Not sure what it is. It was just on a fallen log in the northeast US. Was told it may be medicinal. Apologies for the massive pics.

I also found what I believe to be only a chaga look alike. It is fucking ginormous. Each is nearly 3 ft wide!

I think I found some actual chaga on a black birch tree to, but my camera died. Here are the pieces. I'll be going back for a pic of it tomorrow. (any idea what the bottom or top green ones are?)

Then I found these cuties

Grattitude

Cool, thank you! Anyone know if this species of ganoderma medicinal? From what I understand, there at least aren't any toxic ganoderma.

I'll try and get picture of the supposed chaga tomorrow

I haven't learned to know the various coprinoid genera very well, but Coprinus is pretty simple, since there's nothing left in it but C. comatus and the very similar species.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

So is this the same species as the first image, just younger? It was just a few feet away and on the same log.

Yep, or something close to it, it seems the taxonomy of G.applanatum is very poorly understood. There may be multiple species going under that name throughout the world. G.applanatum sensu lato is a good name for it for now I think.
