what species am i growing exactly?
    #20632380 - 09/28/14 07:22 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

hello everyone, ive been taking care of 2 brf cakes for the past 1 1/2 weeks and some pins/mushrooms are growing. but the cakes seem to appear very different, the cake with only one mushroom has a much lighter cap color with some black specks. can someone please help me out by identifying what the species are, or if theyre even the same (i might have used two different syringes, dont recall exactly).. oh, and any other helpful advice or pointers would be great as well, thank you so much!

I have been misting and fanning (at least 5 minutes), my SGFC has holes on all sides besides the top, i used plastic wrap since i didnt have a lid (does this greatly affect the growth?). i also try to give the cakes a couple of hours of light every day as well. whenever the im not giving the cakes light, the sgfc is put in my closet. Thanks again!

They look like P. Cubensis to me. The lighter colored one seems to have a case of Leucism. Both look to be the same species, though.

Don't trust digital china hydrometers.  They are good for nothing.  Your cakes are dry as a bone.

This too. The bruising on your cakes is likely due to lack of moisture. Put them upright in a saucer dish with some water on the bottom for an hour or so to stock up on moisture. Mist when the cakes aren't glistening with water.

Ah okay I thought that the thermometer/hydrometer was decent, I was afraid of over watering the cakes. But I also did handle the cakes sometimes which was why I thought it was bruised (but they were dehydrated at a point due to all of care..)

And what is leucism exactly? I just tried searching it up but only found out it results in a pale color and maybe produces no spores, would it still be safe to consume?

I was reading this a bit fast, thought it was established as too dry
but apparently it was only regarding the cake.
